**Chapter 32: The Lapdog Bites Back**
Helen stood at the entrance, her face a mask of cold indifference. The warmth that once lit up her features upon seeing him was conspicuously absent, replaced by an unsettling chill that filled the air.
Sean’s brow furrowed deeply, a wave of irritation washing over him. He could feel the tension in the room, thick and suffocating. Just then, Lydia’s voice broke through the silence, trembling yet determined. “Ms. Walcott, I know… I know you came here for Sean. Since you’re here, you… you should come in and sit down.”
Lydia’s demeanor was a heartbreaking sight. She appeared to be trembling at the thought of confronting Helen, yet she stood her ground, a picture of loyalty and sacrifice for Sean’s sake. This devotion, though misguided, tugged at Sean’s heartstrings, reminding him of the complexities of their intertwined lives.
Suddenly, a realization struck him like lightning. Helen had come to Royal Court because of his phone call. She was here for him. The irritation that had bubbled within him began to dissipate, replaced by a flicker of hope. His mood lifted, and a smirk crept onto his lips as he leaned back against the couch, tilting his head slightly as he spoke with a patronizing air. “Since you’re here, why are you standing at the door like a statue? Hurry up and get in here and apologize to Lydia.”
His protective stance toward Lydia drew the eyes of everyone in the room, their expressions eager and expectant, as if they were about to witness a grand performance.
Unbeknownst to them, Josh lingered just outside the doorway, hidden from view, a silent observer of the unfolding drama.
Inside the room, the atmosphere shifted as laughter and mockery began to rain down upon Helen. Derek’s voice cut through the tension like a knife. “Helen, you really are such a good little lapdog. Sean tells you to come, and you actually show up. You’ve got some nerve for a jinx like you. Aren’t you embarrassed?”
Helen’s gaze lifted, a faint, icy smile gracing her lips. “A jinx?” she echoed, her voice steady and unwavering. She raised her hand, pointing directly at Sean, who lounged on the couch, exuding an air of arrogance. “Four years ago, you all relied on a partnership with the Griffins to save yourselves from bankruptcy. So tell me, was that deal closed because of your partying, Derek, or because of Lydia’s tears?”
Her words struck a nerve, hitting both Derek and Lydia where it hurt the most. Sean had only agreed to partner with the Morgans because of the engagement between him and Helen, a fact that lingered in the air like a ghost. Helen had worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that the Griffins benefited from that deal, which had ultimately allowed the Morgans to establish their foothold in Veridia.
“Ha! Don’t flatter yourself!” a wiry guy sneered from the back. “Sean partnered with the Morgans purely out of respect for their family. You’re just a fake who stole Ms. Morgan’s identity for 20 years, and now you have the nerve to keep clinging to Sean? Have some shame!”
