**Chapter 41: The Real National Treasure**

With a deep breath, Helen rejuvenated her spirit, her focus snapping back to the screen as the digital battle raged on. The dawn’s light seeped through the window, casting a warm glow that signaled the start of a new day.

After what felt like an eternity of frantic work, Helen had finally managed to execute the essential emergency repairs, bringing a semblance of stability to the chaotic situation that had threatened to spiral out of control.

Despite the fatigue etched into her features, she was resolute, unwilling to grant herself even a moment’s respite. Rising from her chair, she made her way to the bathroom, the cool tiles beneath her feet grounding her as she stepped under the refreshing stream of water. The shower washed away not just the physical grime of the night but also the mental exhaustion that clung to her.

Once revitalized, she hastily packed her laptop into her sturdy canvas bag, a vessel that now held not just her work but critical data from a national research project—one that could reshape the future. With a casual flick of her shoulder, she slung the bag over it, feeling the weight of responsibility settle in.

As she descended the staircase, the sounds of laughter and accolades floated toward her from the main hall, a stark contrast to the solitary battle she had just fought.

“Oh my, Wendy is simply marvelous!”

“Keep up the excellent work, and you’ll be Professor Langford’s student in no time. Your future will be limitless!”

“Don’t forget to review your thesis thoroughly before submission!”

Caught off guard, Helen felt a wave of silence wash over her.

In the center of the room, Wendy sat like a queen in her designer suit dress, her long hair elegantly swept up, her makeup flawlessly applied. She exuded an air of sophistication, a picture-perfect socialite basking in the glow of her family’s admiration. Clutched tightly in her hands was a thick thesis, her pride evident as she perched gracefully on the couch.

Across from her sat Alexander and Rebecca, their faces illuminated with smiles that spoke of parental pride.

“Dad, Mom, you’re too generous,” Wendy replied, her voice laced with a gentle confidence that hinted at her assured victory. “I’ve compiled all the experimental data for my thesis. Today, I plan to visit Professor Langford to gauge his interest. I’m hoping to pass the final evaluation and officially become his student.”

While her words were modest, the gleam in her eyes betrayed her true feelings. This was her moment to shine, her opportunity to prove her worth in a family that thrived on academic excellence.

As Helen’s figure appeared at the bottom of the stairs, Wendy’s smile morphed into one tinged with malice, her lips curling ever so slightly.

“Oh, Helen! Are you heading out as well?” Wendy exclaimed, her voice dripping with feigned enthusiasm as she bounded over to her. She reached out, attempting to take the canvas bag from Helen’s shoulder. “I’m just about to meet Professor Langford. Why don’t you join me?”

Wendy’s demeanor shifted momentarily as she seemed to realize her eagerness might be too much. “You might not know who Professor Langford is yet. He’s a cornerstone in our nation’s computer science and systems engineering data security field, a professor at Duntin University, which is the most prestigious institution in Dracovia. You could say he’s practically a national treasure!”

In that moment, she embodied the role of a patient older sister, explaining the wonders of the world to a younger sibling who had yet to experience its splendors.

Helen, however, shifted her weight, deliberately avoiding Wendy’s outstretched hand. Her voice was flat, devoid of warmth. “No need.”
