**Chapter 42: Two Minutes Too Late**
As if a single thought had swept through the room, every gaze converged on Hector, their expressions a blend of confusion and curiosity.
“What do you mean by ‘far from simple’?” someone finally asked, breaking the silence.
Hector took a deep breath, his admiration for Helen evident in his voice as he elaborated, “Last night, when I brought her some milk, I caught a glimpse of her working away in her room. What she was engaged in was nothing short of intricate—complex code data and sophisticated system architecture that was beyond my own understanding.” He paused, letting the weight of his words settle in. “Honestly, what she’s working on is probably just the tip of the iceberg.”
The realization struck him hard, sending a wave of astonishment through his mind. It was clear that Helen was involved in something profound, something that went far beyond the ordinary.
Rebecca’s expression shifted from curiosity to concern, her voice trembling as she spoke, “She’s so young, and yet she’s taken on such immense responsibility. We have the means to support her; she shouldn’t have to bear this weight alone.”
Felix, ever the optimist, interjected with a gentle smile, “You should be proud of her, Rebecca.” He stroked his chin thoughtfully, his eyes gleaming with pride. “Walcott children are not the type to back down from challenges! Helen isn’t the sort of child who needs to lean on her family to get by. Her ability to take on such responsibility is commendable.”
His tone radiated pride, and he continued, “If Hector, of all people, is singing her praises, then she must be truly exceptional. She embodies what it means to be a Walcott!”
Wendy stood off to the side, absorbing Felix’s words, which dripped with approval and admiration for Helen. She watched as Alexander, Rebecca, and Hector all nodded in agreement, their faces lit with pride.
But for Wendy, that admiration felt like a thousand needles piercing her heart. Wasn’t it clear that the real achievement worth celebrating was her upcoming opportunity to study under Philip?
If Helen was indeed as remarkable as they claimed, why hadn’t she shared her accomplishments with the family? How could she keep her talents hidden and remain silent?
Wendy’s fists clenched tightly, a surge of anger rising within her. She felt increasingly invisible in this family, her own achievements overshadowed by Helen’s perceived brilliance.
Gloria, who had been standing quietly behind Wendy, noticed her distressed expression and quickly interjected with a bright smile, “That’s right! The children raised by Mr. Walcott and their parents are all extraordinary. Just look at Ms. Wendy! She’s about to meet Professor Langford herself.”
But her attempt to shift the focus back to Wendy fell flat.
Rebecca barely acknowledged her, her mind clearly elsewhere. “Mm, Wendy, just be careful on the road,” she murmured absentmindedly, her thoughts still consumed by Helen. “I really need to check the kitchen and prepare some nourishing soup for her. She’ll need to replenish her strength when she gets back.”
Wendy felt her smile evaporate, her manicured nails digging into her palms as frustration bubbled within her.
Gloria gently squeezed her hand, concern etched on her face. “Ms. Wendy…”
Just as Wendy was about to shake her off, Gloria shot her a significant look, urging her to step outside with her.
