**Chapter 51: Shattered Pride**

A torrent of crushing humiliation engulfed Wendy, leaving her feeling as though she had been plunged into icy waters. Each breath she took became a sharp gasp, her heart racing wildly, while panic clawed at her throat like a relentless beast.

Just moments before, as if the universe conspired against her, Helen and Philip rounded the corner. In that fleeting instant, Wendy caught a glimpse of a figure that sent her heart plummeting into her stomach. It was tall, upright—an unmistakable silhouette.

For a brief moment, it seemed as if he had effortlessly joined Helen, merging seamlessly into their duo, leaving Wendy grappling with disbelief.

Timothy?

What on earth was he doing at the institute? How could he possibly be walking alongside them?

No… it couldn’t be.

She must have conjured the image out of her yearning, driven by the countless times she had heard his familiar car pull up to the Walcotts’ house over the past few days. Yet, she had never once laid eyes on him. The longing for his presence had twisted her mind, creating illusions.

Timothy was nothing more than a figment of her imagination, a cruel trick her heart played on her.

But Philip’s confident demeanor towards Helen and the sight of Helen stepping into the institute with such assurance—those were painfully real.

Every boastful word Wendy had ever uttered, every ounce of pride she had carried, felt as if it had been ground to dust beneath Helen’s feet.

Her pride lay scattered like shattered glass around her.

“Impossible… this is impossible…” she muttered to herself, her voice barely a whisper, a haze of disbelief clouding her thoughts.

“Wendy…” William’s expression mirrored her turmoil, his eyes wide with shock. He recalled how he had been flaunting his status before two stunning girls, only to be blindsided moments later by the sight of the girl he had dismissed as inconsequential, now striding in with top-level clearance.

His eyes darted around the room, anxiety bubbling within him like a boiling pot. He gripped Wendy’s shoulder tightly, his voice urgent. “Stay right here. I need to find out what trick she used to get into the institute.”

With that declaration, William lifted his leg, poised to step through the entrance.

But the instant he attempted to cross the threshold, he was met with an abrupt stop.

Two Department of Defense guards stood resolutely in his path, their rifles crossed like an unyielding barricade.

William froze, a chill running down his spine. He fumbled for his work badge, holding it up as if it were a lifeline. “I’m a researcher here. Why are you blocking my way?”

The guard remained impassive, his gaze unyielding and cold. “Your clearance has been revoked. If you have any inquiries, direct them to your superior.”

A wave of humiliation washed over William, turning his face a sickly shade of blue and then a pale white. Pure embarrassment engulfed him like a suffocating fog.

A few coworkers strolled by, casting him bemused glances, clearly entertained by his predicament.

He felt as though needles were pricking at his skin, the urge to shrink away and vanish overwhelming.

Wendy’s pupils constricted in realization. Her first instinct screamed that Helen must have orchestrated this entire charade.

But how could Helen possess such power?
