**Chapter 50: The Black Card**

A sudden commotion erupted as guards from the Department of Defense rushed towards them, their movements sharp and methodical. The air crackled with tension, a palpable weight that pressed down on Helen, Wendy, and William. Though their weapons were held at ease, their keen eyes roamed over the trio like hawks, ready to swoop in at a moment’s notice.

Helen was the initial focus of their scrutiny, but soon, Wendy and William found themselves ensnared in the guards’ watchful gaze.

In a moment of instinctive fear, Wendy recoiled, seeking solace behind William. Her voice trembled as she pointed an accusatory finger at Helen, her words spilling out in a rush. “I… it’s her! She was trying to break into the institute! I’m a student of Professor Langford, and I… I was just trying to stop her…”

William, despite his familiarity with the institute’s intimidating atmosphere, felt the tension thickening around them like a heavy fog. He fidgeted with his lab coat, a nervous habit surfacing in response to the mounting pressure. “I… I’m with the institute…” he stammered, his voice barely above a whisper.

But the guards remained unmoved, their presence formidable and imposing. The air felt electric, and yet, amidst this chaos, Helen stood resolute. Her demeanor was cool and composed, a striking contrast to the anxiety swirling around her companions.

With a fluid motion that spoke of confidence, she reached into her canvas bag and produced a sleek, mysterious black card, its surface utterly devoid of any markings or identifiers.

Approaching the scanner with an air of calm assurance, she tapped the card against it, her gaze steady as she prepared for the facial recognition scan.

A sharp beep sliced through the charged atmosphere, reverberating in the silence.

“Verification passed,” the scanner announced, its mechanical voice echoing in the tense stillness.

The heavy metal gate slid open with a slow, deliberate whir, granting her access.

“I can go in?” Helen asked, a flicker of surprise dancing in her eyes as she processed the unexpected turn of events.

At this, the guards straightened, their demeanor shifting dramatically. They raised their hands in a crisp salute, stepping aside as if she were royalty, granting her passage without hesitation.

Helen didn’t even flinch at their sudden change in attitude. With practiced ease, she tucked the black card back into her bag and strode through the gate, leaving Wendy and William in a state of utter bewilderment.

“H… Helen…”

Wendy’s eyes widened in disbelief, her entire face frozen in shock as she watched Helen glide effortlessly into the institute. Her heart raced, each beat echoing in her ears, and her breaths became shallow and erratic. “How… how could she… how could she have access to the institute?”

A whirlwind of thoughts spiraled through her mind, racing towards the only conclusion she could grasp: the Walcotts must have granted Helen some sort of clearance. But even the powerful Walcotts would find it challenging to influence a national research facility, where entry required not just a card but also matching facial recognition.

This realization struck Wendy like a bolt of lightning—Helen hadn’t stolen anything; she had legitimate authorization. But how could that be?

Helen, a girl from the countryside, someone even the unremarkable Meng family had cast aside, how could she possibly have gained such access?
