**Chapter 60: It’s Annoying**
Wendy let out a deep, exasperated sigh, her frustration spilling over like a pot left too long on the stove. “I had to beg him, not once, not twice, but three times before he finally relented and agreed to come. Convincing Dr. Smith is like trying to move a mountain,” she exclaimed, her voice tinged with urgency. The weight of Felix’s deteriorating condition felt like a heavy cloak draped over her shoulders, one she was desperate to shake off.
Samuel, with his self-assured demeanor, stroked his beard thoughtfully, his eyes narrowing as he surveyed the scene before him. His gaze flitted dismissively over Felix’s legs, finally landing on Helen, who stood there, needles in hand, ready to assist.
He took a moment to scrutinize her youthful, attractive face, noting the premium needles she held delicately between her fingers. A scowl creased his lips, and disdain flickered in his eyes. “Enough of this nonsense! Needling therapy is not just a trivial pursuit, you foolish girl! What do you even know about meridians and pressure points? Do you have any grasp of the concepts of tonifying or purging?”
His voice rose, sharp and accusatory, the words slicing through the already tense atmosphere. “Mr. Felix’s leg issues arise from blocked meridians and stagnant energy. I’ve devoted over fifty years to the field of alternative medicine, and even I wouldn’t be so audacious as to claim I could resolve this. Do you truly believe that watching a few television shows qualifies you as a doctor? You’re putting your elder’s life at risk! If you make a mistake, it’s not just a failure to treat him—you could be endangering him! And in doing so, you’re sullying the reputation of thousands of years of alternative medicine!”
His words landed like a physical blow, each syllable dripping with contempt and scorn.
He called Helen out for her audacity, for daring to act as if she possessed all the answers, and he placed the blame for “ruining the reputation of medicine” squarely on her shoulders.
A thick tension enveloped the room, and several of the Walcott elders stiffened at his harsh rebuke, their faces morphing into sharp, hostile glares directed at Samuel.
“Grandpa, Dad, Mom, Felix—please don’t be upset,” Wendy interjected, her voice rising slightly, attempting to soothe the storm brewing around her. She wore a mask of concern, one that seemed solely focused on Felix. “Dr. Smith isn’t wrong. Helen just wants to help, but the pressure on her is immense.”
“Dr. Smith is renowned throughout Veridia, a man with a wealth of experience. Since he’s already here, why not allow him to take a look first and offer his insights? If he has a plan, then Helen won’t have to shoulder the entire burden of treating Grandpa. And even if he can’t help, Helen can always step in afterward.”
Her words flowed earnestly, her expression painted with genuine worry. “It’s just an extra layer of protection. Everything we do is for Grandpa’s legs, so he can recover.”
On the surface, her reasoning seemed sound, and her articulation was convincing.
Yet deep within, Wendy had never truly believed that Helen could remedy Felix’s condition.
But she couldn’t simply stand by and watch Helen put on a performance in front of him. She had tugged at every string available, exhausting years of saved allowance to bring this so-called miracle doctor, whose fame spread across Veridia like wildfire, to their doorstep.
If Helen could feign a treatment for Felix’s leg, then Samuel, with his credentials, could surely do it better. It was far more sensible to let her invited doctor handle the situation rather than allow Helen to pretend to be a healer. If Felix’s leg showed improvement, he would undoubtedly express his gratitude to Wendy, and that was the validation she craved.
In that moment, she envisioned winning back the family’s affection and attention. Once everyone acknowledged her efforts, she could finally seize the opportunity to undermine Helen and drive her out of the house for good.
Felix shifted his gaze between Wendy and Samuel, a slight frown creasing his brow.
He remained unimpressed by this miracle doctor who had seemingly materialized out of thin air.
Countless experts in both modern and alternative medicine had scrutinized his legs in the past.
The chairman of the Veridia Alternative Medicine Association, along with the president of the Global Alternative Medicine Association, had consulted with top specialists both locally and internationally, ultimately concluding that his legs stood little chance of recovery.
And now, out of nowhere, this miracle doctor claimed to have the solution?
