“Mr. Palmer should just call off the engagement. Even if he can’t marry Honora anymore, he doesn’t have to settle for this classless new heiress.”
Haskell’s voice, though soft, cut through the murmurs. “My engagement to Larissa is not your concern. She is the woman I have chosen, and I trust her completely. I have no doubt that she knows what she is doing.”
The warmth in his tone was gone, replaced by an unwavering defense of Larissa that silenced the crowd.
Kiernan and Zoltan watched Larissa intently, waiting to see how she would handle the crisis. One wanted to know if his granddaughter truly had the strength to one day lead the Judson enterprises. The other was curious to see just what it was about this young woman that had so captivated his most prized grandson.
Faced with a room full of doubt, Larissa simply let out a light laugh. She turned to Leopold. “Are you sure about that, Leopold? Are you really so certain you had no interest in what I would be wearing tonight?”
Leopold met her gaze without flinching. “Of course! You’re not my sister. Why would I care what you wear?”
Larissa raised an eyebrow. “I already told you. Because just like Aunt Vivica, you wanted to see me humiliated in front of everyone tonight.”
Paxton stepped forward, his voice stern. “Larissa, you need evidence to make such accusations. This is not the time or place for your theatrics!”
“Uncle Paxton, you always call it theatrics whenever I expose your true intentions,” Larissa shot back. “When have I ever been merely dramatic? The truth is that I was switched at birth by Honora’s mother. The truth is that you and Aunt Vivica refused to acknowledge me for Honora’s sake. So, I chose to be adopted by Neville and Sapphira. You thought I was throwing a tantrum then, too, but I signed the papers, didn’t I? That proved I was serious.”
Seeing her steer the conversation into even more dangerous territory, Paxton’s face darkened. “Larissa, do not air our dirty laundry in public!”
Larissa feigned surprise. “Oh, so you do realize it’s dirty laundry, Uncle Paxton? Your own daughter was stolen, and for twenty years you raised the daughter of your enemy. Then, when your real daughter is finally found, you cast her aside for the impostor. Yes, that is quite the family scandal. As ugly as it gets, in fact.”
