A gasp went through the crowd.
“She sounds so confident. I’m almost starting to believe her.”
“Honestly, she’s not at all what I expected. This is getting interesting.”
Larissa’s words were spoken with such conviction that Honora, who had been burned by her once before, felt a prickle of anxiety.
She shot a nervous glance at Leopold. She had only mentioned to him that she adored the dress after learning Sapphira had ordered it for Larissa. Leopold had immediately volunteered to get it for her. He had handled the entire acquisition himself; she hadn’t been involved at all. If any evidence existed, the mistake had to have been on his end.
Leopold felt a flicker of doubt, but he refused to believe his contact, Kitty, would double-cross him with a counterfeit. His confidence returned in a rush.
“Fine, Larissa! Prove that your dress is the real one. And let’s see this supposed evidence that we deliberately targeted you!”
The guests leaned forward, eager for the drama to unfold. Most wanted to see Larissa crash and burn, but a growing number were curious to see how she would fight back.
“Oh, I will,” Larissa said calmly. But instead of responding directly to Leopold’s challenge, she turned to Zoltan. “First, let’s make sure Mr. Palmer and his family are seated.”
Kiernan snapped back to his duties as host. “Yes, yes, of course. My apologies.”
Neville respectfully gestured toward a table. “Zoltan, please, this way.”
