Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 271

After leaving the hospital, Amelia got a call from Grandma Edith, who finally explained everything. That’s when Amelia learned Violet hadn’t even been in Silkwood these past three years.

“She’s been in Westwood ever since you left, Amelia. Daniel hasn’t seen her, I promise you that...”

“Grandma,” Amelia cut her off, “I don’t care about them. If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up.”

Grandma Edith sighed. “I just don’t want any more misunderstandings between you.”

“There’s no misunderstanding,” Amelia replied, her voice as steady as her heart. “Neglect and coldness—that’s what really hurts.”

Grandma Edith fell silent.

Amelia wasn’t faking her calm. She really was at peace. Only when you care does anything have the power to upset you. She’d already peeled him out of her heart. Even if he and Violet kissed right in front of her, she doubted she’d bat an eye. Hell, she might even clap and tell them they were a perfect match.

She didn’t want to rehash the past; she just wanted to live her life. But some people have a way of showing up whether you want them to or not.

The next day, as she was leaving the research institute, a car came up behind her, not quite speeding, but hovering close—close enough to force her off the road, inch by inch, until she had no choice but to stop.

Amelia was usually pretty composed, but even she couldn’t help feeling a surge of irritation at such reckless driving. She pushed open her door, ready to unleash hell—until she saw the face behind the wheel. Mogan.

Not that surprising, she guessed. Violet was back in Silkwood; Mogan would surely follow.

Given his boorish driving, Amelia could already guess why he was here.

And sure enough, Mogan’s opening line was pure accusation: “Violet’s already been more than patient with you. Just because she’s kind doesn’t mean you get to walk all over her! I’m telling you, Amelia, this is your warning. Next time, I won’t let it slide!”

That thought only made him angrier, his face darkening. “You’re nothing but a stand-in. No matter how much you look like her, you’ll only ever be a substitute. If I were you, I’d take the divorce settlement and disappear for good. Haven’t you learned your lesson from three years ago? With Daniel, you’ll never measure up to Violet—not even close.”

Even with her heart as steady as stone, the mention of the past pricked at Amelia. “No one’s trying to outdo her. You don’t need to keep reminding me. And for the last time, I haven’t done anything to Violet. If you don’t believe me, ask Daniel yourself!”

As soon as she said it, she realized how pointless it was. Daniel was just as much in Violet’s corner—sending Mogan to him was like asking a judge who’d already made up his mind.

A wave of exhaustion washed over her. Sunlight glared across her face, making her momentarily dizzy. These men—one after another—were all hopeless.

Nothing but Violet’s loyal dogs.

Amelia didn’t talk to dogs. She turned to leave, but Mogan grabbed her arm. Off balance, she slammed her side against her car’s wing mirror. She was already cramping from her period, and the jolt sent a sharp pain through her stomach, draining what little color was left from her face.
