As soon as he finished speaking, the man grabbed Amelia’s hand and placed it on the harness at his shoulder, then—without warning—stood up.
She had no choice but to rise with him.
“Amelia, I’d risk everything—my own life included—to keep you safe.”
His words, whispered so close to her ear, were snatched away by the wind as Daniel leapt off the edge, taking her with him.
“Daniel, I swear I’m going to—ahhh!”
For two heart-stopping seconds, it felt as if her heart had stopped altogether. Weightless, plummeting through the air, her senses were overloaded; the rush of wind faded into nothing, replaced by the sensation of her soul leaving her body.
Her mind only caught up as their speed began to slow. When the terror passed, her body felt almost light, as if she’d been reborn after brushing so close to death. There was a wild kind of freedom in it—a gratitude for simply being alive, impossible to express in words.
Daniel loosened his grip on her hand, opening her fingers so she could feel the clouds swirling around them.
With a sharp jolt and a sudden “pop,” the parachute deployed, yanking them upward and arresting their fall. Suddenly, they were drifting gently through the sky.
Only then did Amelia dare to open her eyes fully.
The moment she did, the sight before her made her forget how to speak.
Words were useless in the face of such absolute beauty. The endless blue above, thick banks of rolling clouds, sunlight splitting through in golden shafts—it felt like witnessing the first light of a new life.
Suspended between heaven and earth, Amelia finally understood what Ava had once told her: “You only get thirty thousand days—don’t waste them all the same.”
Moments like this—the ones that would stick in her memory forever—were rare, and yet, she had to admit, the person sharing it with her wasn’t exactly her first choice.
“It’s so beautiful up here,” Daniel murmured behind her. “Kind of makes me want to kiss you. What do you think?”
Amelia’s heart had just started to settle down. With a deep breath, she took in the grandeur around her and managed, “Daniel, don’t make me slap you in the most beautiful place on earth.”
Staring at the vast, rolling sky, Amelia felt herself shrinking—just one tiny speck in the universe. All the tangled worries weighing on her heart seemed to unravel. If people were this small, why carry so many pointless burdens?
Suddenly, everything felt open and clear. Love, heartbreak, all those tangled feelings—did they really matter? In this wide, boundless world, life itself was the only thing with true value. Everything else was just decoration; nice to have, but hardly essential.
Waking up each morning was already a stroke of luck—a happiness denied to thousands.
“Can I make a wish?” she asked quietly.
Daniel grinned. “Go ahead. We’re close enough to the heavens; maybe the gods are actually listening.”
Amelia closed her eyes, letting the wind and mist brush against her skin. In her heart, she whispered her wish:
Let Ruby find a match soon. Let her surgery go smoothly. Let her grow up safe and strong.

How come in every novel I read on here the women don’t tell the men they are the father of their child? I find this ridiculous....
