Ruby didn’t get home until nearly midnight. Amelia bathed her, dressed her in fresh, soft pajamas, and gently stroked her hair while telling her a bedtime story. Ruby drifted off to sleep before Snow White even met the seven dwarfs.
Amelia tucked the covers around Ruby and quietly left the room.
“You should go home. Whatever it is, we’ll talk tomorrow.”
Daniel stood in the living room with one hand in his pocket, his gaze lowered, studying her face, unreadable. “You’re so calm—it’s almost unnerving.”
“What are you afraid of?” Amelia looked up and met his eyes. “Afraid I’ll go after Violet? Retaliate?”
“I’m afraid you’ll ask for a divorce.”
Daniel let out a weary sigh, his voice rough. “Amelia, the person I care about is you. Not Violet.”
Amelia gave a tired half-smile. “So what?”
“What happened to Ruby was an accident. I don’t want it to make things even worse between us.”
She felt a wave of exhaustion wash over her. “Daniel, why can’t you see? As long as we’re married, Violet will never back off.”
Amelia couldn’t begin to describe the terror of those hours when Ruby was missing. Her heart felt like it was dangling over a bottomless cliff, ready to plunge into the abyss at the slightest bit of bad news.
Daniel watched her, lips parted as if to speak, but no words came.
“Violet loves you more than you think. She’s more obsessed than you realize,” Amelia said, her voice steady but drained. She was tired—tired of being trapped in this messy triangle.
“You can’t protect us from a lunatic, especially when she’s got another one by her side. They’re not just coming after me anymore, Daniel. They’re coming after Ruby. Do you understand what that means?”
“She’s warning me. Threatening me. As long as I’m still your wife, she’ll never stop. You keep promising me it’ll be alright—but your promises mean nothing. Can you really make Violet disappear forever? Can you make Morgan disappear?”
Amelia locked eyes with him, leaving him nowhere to hide. “Can you do that?”
A flicker of pain crossed Daniel’s eyes. He closed them, Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallowed back words he couldn’t say.
The silence in the living room stretched on until finally, his voice broke through.
“I can’t.”
He couldn’t do it.
There were a hundred ways Daniel could make someone disappear. But not Violet. Not her.
Maybe he truly didn’t care anymore—but that was now. The feelings he’d buried in his youth still had a place in his heart, whether he admitted it or not.
For Daniel, Violet was an irreplaceable ache—something beautiful and scarred into his soul. His answer didn’t surprise Amelia.
After Daniel left, Amelia crawled into bed beside Ruby. She was exhausted, but sleep wouldn’t come.
By three in the morning, when she was just starting to doze off, Ruby suddenly cried out in terror, as if haunted by a nightmare. She sobbed with her eyes still closed. Amelia held her tight, soothing her as best she could, her own heart twisting in pain.
Violet’s smile faltered. “You’re only acting so high and mighty because you’re Mrs. Campbell. Does Daniel even know how arrogant you are?”
Amelia gave a sharp, humorless laugh. “You know I’m Mrs. Campbell, Violet. Kicking you out today is just the beginning. From now on, your job, your connections, every penny you’ve gotten from the Campbell family—I’m taking it all back. You want to know what real arrogance looks like? I’ll show you.”
For the first time, Violet truly saw Amelia for who she was. That fierce, overwhelming presence—she’d only ever felt that kind of pressure from Daniel himself.
Violet was speechless for a moment, then forced out a weak, “Daniel won’t let you do this.”
“The lawyers have already been contacted. Everything you’re enjoying now—down to the medical bills, tuition, and every cent Daniel’s ever spent on you—half of it is mine. I’m not just taking back what’s here now; I want it all, past and present. Get ready for the lawyers to go through it with you, line by line.”
Violet couldn’t help but panic. She’d always thought Amelia was a pushover, easy to ignore. She never imagined Amelia would actually fight back.
“I’m calling Daniel,” Violet said, grabbing for her phone.
Amelia’s lips curled into a cold smile. She snatched a vase off the coffee table and hurled it to the floor.
The crash shattered the silence—and the glass. Violet screamed.
“Amelia, have you lost your mind?!”
Without missing a beat, Amelia picked up a pair of porcelain swans and smashed them too.
Her actions were ruthless, but her tone was as calm as ever. “What, I can’t break my own things? Is there a law against smashing your own property?”

How come in every novel I read on here the women don’t tell the men they are the father of their child? I find this ridiculous....
