Like two hearts endlessly colliding.

The doorman saw them sprinting toward the entrance and hurried to hold the door open. Even in her rush, Amelia managed a quick, breathless smile and a “Thank you.”

Daniel gripped her hand tightly as they dashed out of the dazzling ballroom into the cool embrace of the night. The streetlights cast a gentle glow over them—not blinding, but soft, as if they’d stumbled into a scene from a storybook.

“Feels just like a prince whisking his princess away from a dark tower, off to their happily ever after,” the doorman couldn’t help but remark.

Robert waited inside for what felt like ages, scanning the crowd for Amelia. When a server mentioned that the lady who’d arrived with him had slipped out the side door, he hurried in that direction—only to catch a glimpse of Daniel leading Amelia out, her pink dress vanishing through the glass doors.

Daniel’s car was waiting at the curb. Amelia, still fueled by adrenaline, scrambled inside and all but begged the driver to go, go, go. It wasn’t until they’d driven several blocks that she caught her breath.

“Could you stop up ahead? I’ll get a cab home myself.”

Daniel was still holding her hand. Her cold fingers had already grown warm in his broad grasp.

He lifted their joined hands, his voice teasing. “So you’re just going to ditch me now that I’ve helped?”

Amelia pulled, but he held fast. “If you want to call it burning your bridges, that works too.”

Daniel chuckled—a low, rumbling sound. “First I’m a dog, now a donkey—guess I don’t even rate as a person to you.”

Amelia smirked. “Let me out, and I’ll grant you honorary human status.”

Daniel rapped his knuckles against the driver’s seat. The car eased to a stop.

Amelia blinked. That was suspiciously easy. She twisted to open her door, but it wouldn’t budge—the lock was still on.

Across the back seat, Daniel’s door clicked open. He stepped out, legs unfolding, and shut the door behind him with a thud. “What are you thinking? No way am I letting Mrs. Donkey get away that easily.”

Naturally, his door was locked too.
