“Who else but me would bother bringing you flowers?” Mr. Campbell’s expression shifted in an instant, and not in a good way. “That Robert guy? Doesn’t he see you at work every day? Isn’t that enough for him? Now he’s got to pull these flashy stunts with flowers too?”
Amelia rolled her eyes. When Daniel brought her flowers, he called it romantic, but if anyone else did, suddenly it was “flashy nonsense.”
“It wasn’t Robert Rubin. Someone’s sent flowers twice now, but there’s never a note. I have no idea who it is.”
It had been too long to figure out now, and besides, the anonymous sender had only sent flowers twice and never done anything else. As she finished, Amelia turned to leave, but Daniel caught her by the wrist.
Her patience frayed. “What exactly do you want from me?”
He looked at her, still holding the bouquet in one hand, her wrist in the other. His gaze softened in the scent of the flowers, earnest and almost heartbreakingly sincere. “Isn’t it obvious? I’m trying to make this work between us. I want us to have a real relationship.”
A laugh burst out of Amelia—sharp, genuine, and impossible to suppress.
“Relationships are like plants,” she said, gently prying his hand off with two fingers. “You need a pot to grow them in. There isn’t one for us, Daniel. There’s nowhere for anything to take root. Don’t waste your time.”
He stared at her, searching her face as if he could will her to change her mind. “Who says we don’t have a pot? What do you want—gold, silver, diamonds? Name it, and I’ll get it for you. I’ll build you any container you want.”
He let out a long, defeated sigh. “Amelia, just give me a chance. Let’s stop fighting like this.”
She pulled her hand free. “It wouldn’t matter if the pot was made of diamonds if you’re the one on the other side of it. Daniel, it’s over. There’s nothing left for us.”
With that, she headed upstairs, leaving him behind.
She was as resolute as a blade, sharp and unyielding.
Daniel stayed where he was, staring down at the bouquet he never got to give. The flowers were lush and radiant, but he stood there cold and alone.

How come in every novel I read on here the women don’t tell the men they are the father of their child? I find this ridiculous....
