“Not great,” Amelia replied flatly, her words cutting like ice. “No wonder you’ve had so much free time lately. The company’s doing so badly you can’t even afford a spokesperson?”

Daniel didn’t mind admitting he was broke. He played along with a shrug. “Exactly. Things are so tight, I have to be my own brand ambassador. Every penny counts.”

Amelia snapped her laptop shut. “Well, might as well save up for a dowry when you remarry.”

Daniel clenched his jaw, itching to pin her to the couch and demand which one of them actually wanted this divorce. Before he could make a move, she slipped away like a slick little eel, darting behind Grandma Edith and flashing him a cheeky middle finger.

All his anger fizzled out just watching her—so lively and mischievous. He stood there, rooted to the spot, while she pretended to help Ruby press cookie cutters into dough, sneaking glances at him as if daring him to come over for payback.

That adorable, impish look of hers hit him right in the heart.

Daniel didn’t budge. He just watched her quietly, for a long, long time.

The very next day, after having ruthlessly shot Daniel down, Amelia was summoned by the director and handed a new assignment. The reason? Her poise and presence made her the ideal candidate to represent the institute.

She didn’t need a crystal ball to guess whose idea this was, but she still tried her luck. “Will I be the only one representing us?”

“We’ll have someone from our institute, and IntelliQuip will have their own spokesperson. It’s meant to symbolize a partnership between the two.”

Amelia’s face fell.

The director chuckled at her expression. “What, worried you’ll have to share the spotlight? Trust me, once you hear who’s representing IntelliQuip, you won’t look so glum. It’s—”

He arched his thick eyebrows over his thinning hair and gave her a knowing look. “A real heartthrob.”

“Mr. Campbell. And you two already know each other.”

Amelia felt hope drain right out of her.
