“Don’t go… I’ll eat by myself. Just stay with me for a little while.”
Daniel’s hand was burning hot against her skin, sending a shiver down Amelia’s leg that left her covered in goosebumps. She shook him off. “Five minutes. That’s it.”
Daniel rubbed his head as he sat up, tossed back some pills, and his Adam’s apple bobbed with the effort.
Amelia glanced over, then quickly looked away.
“Go to the hospital tomorrow. Don’t die here and haunt my apartment, got it?”
Daniel must have really been feeling awful; his eyes were glassy and unfocused as he stared at her for a moment. But he managed a nod. “Alright.”
But then—
“Let me hold you for a while. I promise I’ll leave tomorrow.”
So, he’d heard her, just not the part she wanted him to.
Amelia was in no mood for a fight in the middle of the night. She turned to leave, but suddenly Daniel was on his feet, scooping her up into his arms.
“Daniel!” She seriously suspected he was faking it—one minute he was too weak to move, the next he had the strength to carry her like she weighed nothing. She tried to wriggle free, but it was useless.
“Shhh.” He carried her swiftly into the bedroom. “Keep your voice down, you’ll wake Ruby.”
Amelia landed a slap on his chin—not loud, but sharp. “You jerk!”
“Jerks don’t just hold hands, you know.” Daniel set her down on the bed, then lay beside her, wrapping his arms around her and tangling his legs with hers. He clung to her like a koala to a tree.
“I’m not doing anything. Amelia, just let me hold you. That’s all I want.”
“…”
“I won’t do anything. I just want to sleep like this, holding you…”
She struggled for a while, but Daniel’s grip was like a soft rope, impossible to break free from. Frustrated, she pressed her lips together, refusing to say another word.

Suddenly, Daniel sensed the space in his arms was empty. “Amelia…”

Only when he held her did that hollow place in his chest feel whole again.
“Amelia…” he murmured, “Are you mad at me?”

“How could I not save you?” His voice was a raw whisper. “You’re the one I love most…”
Amelia didn’t hear a word of it.
The Amelia in Daniel’s arms was nothing but a long, body-shaped pillow.

How come in every novel I read on here the women don’t tell the men they are the father of their child? I find this ridiculous....
