Lisa's scalp tingled, and she didn't dare to look Martha in the eye.

"Look at me when I'm talking to you!" As her mother, Martha could easily see through her subtle gestures.

Lisa still wouldn't lift her head, merely muttering, "I don't know. Don't ask me."

Martha stopped her from packing by grabbing her wrist. "Don't try to fool me!"

"Mom, this is personal. Logan and I have our own lives. It's not right for you to ask me about his private matters. How would I know? He's my uncle, not someone who shares everything with me." Lisa's frustration was palpable.

Martha was taken aback by her outburst and fell silent for a few seconds. Finally, she said, "I suppose you're right."

Lisa breathed a sigh of relief. Knowing Martha's tendency to pry, she was sure she would go straight to Logan. If he spilled the beans, she'd be in trouble too.

So, she tried to reason with Martha. "Mom, even though Uncle Logan is your brother, and you care about him, you can't interfere in every aspect of his life. Even your own son needs his privacy, right? As for who he likes, you'll know when he brings her to meet you one day."

"I'm not trying to know who he likes," Martha said, her voice laced with indignation. "I want to know what's so special about this woman that he has to cut ties with the Cohens. Why is she so against the Cohens?"

"She has no grudge against them," Lisa mumbled.

"Then why is she making your uncle do this? Do you know how much this hurts your grandparents?" Martha looked much more worn out.

"It's not like that, Mom. Uncle Logan made his own decision. You're jumping to conclusions without knowing the whole story." Lisa felt genuinely wronged.

She had never harbored improper feelings for Logan. Nor had she ever encouraged him to sever ties with the Cohens. Now, she was somehow taking the blame for all this.

The injustice of it all was overwhelming.
