Xander's house was a three-room home. It had two bedrooms and a study, all immaculately tidy.
Lisa had taken up residence in the guest room. The curtains and furnishings, especially the vanity table, seemed as if they were prepared specifically for a woman.
"Dr. Carline, please don't get the wrong idea. This room doesn't belong to my ex-girlfriend. You're actually the first woman, apart from my mom, to ever stay here," he quickly explained.
He told Lisa that the room had been his mother's. Occasionally, she would stay over when she felt like it or when she got into an argument with his father. As a result, the room's decor had a distinctly feminine touch.
She could sense it too—the room had a motherly feel to it. It reminded her of the times she used to sneak into Martha's room to sleep when she was little.
Martha tried to make her sleep in her own bed, but she would always refuse, often sneaking back in late at night.
This continued on and off until she was around ten years old. Martha had asked her, "You're old enough now, why are you still so clingy to me? Are you scared to sleep alone?"
Her response was that she felt safer and more secure with Martha close.
As she grew older, she stopped clinging to Martha. It had been a long time since they had shared a bed. Now she even dreaded going home, afraid of her.
They said growth was a journey marked by goodbyes. From the moment we were born, we began a journey of farewells. First, we said goodbye to our mothers, then to our childhood friends and family, and eventually to the world itself as we aged and faced illness or death.
Somewhere along the way, she had drifted so far from Martha without even noticing it.
Perhaps it was this thought that made Lisa feel a pang of sadness. She realized how ungrateful she was for pushing away Martha's concern, so she decided to call her.
"Oh, look who's calling me! Dr. Carline, the one who's been avoiding me like the plague," Martha said with sarcasm as soon as she picked up the phone.
Lisa couldn't remember when their mother-daughter relationship had become like this. She knew she hadn't answered her question earlier and had run off, which must have annoyed Martha. So, she tried to sweet-talk her way back into her good graces. "I missed you, that's all."
