Chapter 120: A Memory Stained Crimson

“Let me give your swing a push,” Reginald offered gently to the little girl with the lively curls bouncing with every movement. She regarded him with curious eyes, studying him for a moment before breaking into the brightest, most enchanting smile he had ever seen. The warm afternoon sun bathed her face, making her smile even more radiant and unforgettable.

As a young boy, Reginald found himself utterly mesmerized by her innocent joy.

“Thanks,” she said softly, her voice carrying a sweet, melodic tone that made Reginald’s own lips curl into a genuine smile as he began to push her swing back and forth.

Their tranquil afternoon was abruptly shattered when a wild dog suddenly charged at them, its eyes wild and desperate, its ribs showing through its matted fur. The animal looked starved and frantic, driven by hunger or fear.

Without hesitation, Reginald grabbed the swing’s chains, halting it to protect the girl.

“Move! Now!” he shouted urgently at Phoebe, whose face had drained of color, terror etched deeply into her features. “Run!”

Phoebe hesitated, torn between fear and loyalty, her gaze flickering between Reginald and the snarling beast barreling toward them. Then, with a sudden resolve, she grabbed his hand and pulled him along.

They scrambled down the hillside, her small legs struggling to keep up with the urgency of their escape. Reginald’s heart pounded as he knew the dog would catch up soon—it was only a matter of time.

Her brave attempt to save him filled him with warmth, but staying together would mean certain death for both of them.

“Keep running! I’m right behind you!” Reginald called out, releasing her hand and focusing on the transformation he had only recently begun to master.

Shifting into his beast form was still awkward and unfamiliar. He had yet to start formal combat training and felt clumsy in this new body.

But fighting as a human against the wild dog would have been a death sentence, so he trusted his instincts and watched Phoebe flee ahead.

“I’ll bring my dad! I’ll bring my dad! Just hold on!” Phoebe called back, tears streaming down her cheeks as she pushed her legs to their limits.

Reginald turned to face the snarling dog, ready to defend himself.

The fight was brief but fierce. By sheer luck and determination, Reginald managed to drive the animal away. It wasn’t a clear victory—the dog retreated rather than being defeated—but it was enough to keep him alive.

When he shifted back into human form, he found his body covered in cuts and bruises. The pain was sharp and overwhelming. Collapsing onto the soft grass, he gazed up at the endless blue sky, his breath shallow, wondering desperately if Phoebe would come back for him.

Darkness claimed him before he could find out.

When Reginald awoke, he was back in his own bedroom. Later, his sister filled him in—Phoebe had kept her promise, returning with her father to find him unconscious on the hillside.

Beta Cameron had rushed him to the hospital and contacted their mother. That moment marked the beginning of a new chapter between Beta Cameron and their mother.

“That little girl wouldn’t stop crying over you,” Viola teased with a playful roll of her eyes.
