Chapter 200 Apologize

Deanna’s POV:

My forehead rested right against his firm chest, and that familiar cedar scent from his pheromones flooded over me like a wave.

A moment ago, I could only feel his heartbeat through my palm. Now, I could hear it thumping in my ear.

My own heart jolted as if struck by lightning.

I couldn’t even tell if the heartbeat belonged to him or me–or both of us mixed.

The sensation left me trembling all over.

“What are you doing? The driver’s right there!”

I pushed against him, panicking, and glanced toward the rearview mirror. Sure enough, the driver’s ears were turning red, and he was sneaking glances at us through the mirror.

Luis noticed my reaction, turned his head toward the front, and released a subtle wave of Alpha dominance.

At his cold warning glance, the driver immediately snapped his eyes forward, spine stiff as a board.

A soft mechanical hum followed as the center divider slowly rose, blocking the view between the front and back seats.

Luis’s voice brushed against my ear, low and teasing. “He can’t see us now.”

“Let me sit back,” I protested, still struggling. His hand only tightened around my waist.

“I don’t want to.”

He said it with a hint of playfulness, his lips grazing my ear. “I’m just really happy you missed me.”

“You can be happy without–ugh–doing this! You’re going to make me fall!”

He chuckled, his cedar–scented breath brushing against my neck. “Then hold on tighter.”

I was speechless.

The Rolls–Royce sped smoothly down the highway. Maybe the driver was terrified, because he drove slower than usual, barely hitting any bumps, even over speed humps.

I stayed obediently in his arms the whole way, my face buried in the crook of his neck. The scent of cedar filled every breath I took until my cheeks felt hot.

“Deanna, say something.”

“What should I say?” I muttered,

“Say that you missed me.”

Instead, I poked his abs under his shirt. “How’s the factory in Euron doing?”

“Not bad,” he replied lazily, still playing with my fingers.

I tried to sound casual. “So… how’d that fire even start so suddenly?”

He tilted his head, smirking. “You’re worried about me?”

“I’m just afraid if Mooncrown Pack goes broke, you’ll lose your Alpha status,” I shot back.

Luis lifted my hand and brushed my fingertips against his lips before giving them a small bite.

“Relax. I’ve still got enough money to take care of you.”

The car eventually pulled into Crestwood Park.

As soon as I opened the door, Puddy came bounding toward me, barking excitedly. He circled me again and again, tail wagging wildly.

These past few days had been rough–I’d been running between managing Mistbane Group during the day and visiting Kathryn at Mistbane Pack at night.

Seeing Puddy now filled me with guilt.

I crouched down and ran my hands over his fur, pressing my forehead gently against his.

“I’m sorry, Puddy. I’ve been too busy lately. I didn’t mean to neglect you.”

Luis leaned against the kitchen counter, sipping a glass of water. At my words, he gave me a long look and hummed softly.

“Funny,” he said, “I don’t remember you apologizing to me.”
