**Chapter 310: Awakening**
**Deanna’s POV:**
As I stepped back into the familiar confines of my office, a wave of anxiety washed over me. Without a moment’s hesitation, I dialed Mom’s number.
The phone rang incessantly, each tone echoing in my chest, squeezing the air from my lungs. Just when I thought I might suffocate under the weight of silence, I heard her voice on the other end, sounding distant and disoriented.
“Mom, are you okay?” My voice trembled, laced with worry.
“What… why am I at the riverbank?” she mumbled, her words slurred as if she had just awakened from a deep slumber.
Images flashed through my mind, the video I had received earlier replaying like a haunting reel. The first clip showed Mom, unconscious, slumped in the driver’s seat of a car parked perilously close to the roaring Matrona River, its currents powerful enough to sweep anything away. The second clip was a jarring contrast: Violet, suspended in the air, clinging desperately to a wire harness.
“Oh, right,” Mom continued, her voice gradually gaining clarity. “I was heading to the press conference to support you, but the driver… he took a wrong turn. I remember thinking about what I wanted to say, but then everything went black. When I opened my eyes, I was here.”
Her tone shifted, anxiety creeping in. “Is the press conference over? Did you tell everyone that Luis is your boyfriend? Do they know you were framed?”
A lump formed in my throat, threatening to choke me. I had planned to reveal everything, but the moment had slipped through my fingers like sand. I was too emotionally drained to even fabricate a reassuring lie.
“Did someone use me to threaten you?” she asked, her voice rising in alarm. “Was it that old witch from Mooncrown Pack? I’m going to find her right now!”
Tears began to spill down my cheeks, my body trembling with the weight of it all. “Mom… please, just go home. That’s the best thing you can do for me right now.”
“Okay, okay. I’ll go back. I promise I won’t cause any trouble for you. Deanna, please don’t cry.”
After hanging up, I felt a surge of desperation and immediately dialed Violet’s number.
Her manager answered, the urgency in his voice palpable. “Deanna?”
I sniffed, trying to steady myself. “Is Violet okay?”
“How did you know something happened? She fell during a wire stunt earlier. This crew is unbelievable! If the staff hadn’t reacted quickly, her leg could have been broken.”
Relief washed over me, but I needed to know more. “How is she now?”
“She’s fine. Thanks to the crew’s quick thinking, she’s just resting now.”
