Chapter 38 Deanna, Come Put On My Shoes!

Barbara’s POV:

Deanna’s words made my face burn with anger.

No wonder! When my back hurt a few days ago, I tried calling her to come over and give me a massage, but her phone was always off

And now she dares to say she broke up with Jake? Haha! I don’t believe it for a second. That girl has loved him to the moon for years. No way she’d let go so easily.

She’d cling to him forever if she could.

I’ve seen these little games before–pretending to leave just to get attention.

“Deanna,” I snapped, “do you even know your place? My son picked you, and that makes you lucky. Don’t you dare bring up breaking up with him. When Jake finally throws you aside, you’ll be the one crying your eyes out.”

But instead of getting angry, she only smiled. “Mrs. Olson, I don’t need that luck. I won’t be your pack’s Luna. Someone else can have that title.”

She humiliated me before everyone; my chest tightened with rage.

Valda leaned close and whispered in my ear. “I heard from Robert that Deanna’s been jealous of Peggie. She’s using this breakup talk to pressure Jake into choosing only her.”

Peggie.

The very name made my stomach twist with annoyance.

Five years ago, I hated her for being half–blooded and sent her away. Later she was diagnosed with heart failure, and somehow the blame fell on me.

They all said I had pushed her too hard, that I’d made her sick.

Because of that, Jake has felt guilty ever since. Peggie’s been using it to keep a hold on him.

Ridiculous!

The truth is, her weak body came from her mixed bloodline. That’s all.

Just then, a salesgirl with white gloves carried out a pair of limited–edition heels in a velvet box. I had spent 2,000,000 dollars and waited a month for these custom shoes.

The salesgirl bent down, ready to help me try them on. I lifted my hand to stop her.

I looked straight at Deanna and commanded, “Deanna, come put on my shoes. Do that, and I’ll tell Jake to stay away from Peggie.”

I narrowed my eyes at her. “You’ve been with my son all these years, and you can’t even handle one Peggie. Jake is an Alpha. He will never have just one woman. If you want to be his Luna, the first thing you need to learn is how to swallow your pride and endure this.”

Deanna didn’t step forward like she used to. Instead, she laughed at my

words.

“Mrs. Olson, I remember something. Didn’t Jake’s dad have an affair with an actress years ago? And you hired people to smear her online, calling her a homewrecker until her career was ruined. If I recall right, that actress was even pregnant. You paid someone to rough her up until she lost the baby. You were once a Luna yourself, but that method of yours was hardly patient or forgiving.”

“You brat!” My whole body shook with rage. I pointed at her, but I couldn’t form a full sentence.

That scandal had been buried so deep, only a few people in the pack ever knew the truth. And yet here Deanna was, daring to drag my darkest secret out into the open!

“Deanna, y–you slut! Stop making up lies! I’ll make sure my son dumps you. Just wait and see.”

“That’s fine by me,” she said calmly. “The standards for being the Luna of your pack are too high anyway. I don’t think I have what it takes. I’ll leave the position for someone else who wants it.”

She turned and walked away.

Valda leaned close, whispering, “Was that really Deanna? Did she lose her mind, talking to you like that?”

The fire in my chest nearly burst out. I slammed my hand against the display stand.

“Lose her mind? No. But I’ll make her regret this. I’ll make Jake dump her for good! And from now on, none of you are allowed to call her my daughter–in–law, or you’ll have a problem with me.”

Karen blinked. “Barbara… about that actress Deanna mentioned. Did you really do something like that back then?”

“Of course not!”

I snapped, nearly shouting. My voice cracked with anger. “She made it all up!”
