Jake’s POV:

I stared at the empty hallway where Deanna had disappeared, and it felt like a hole had opened in my chest.

Deanna, she really had changed.

The way she looked at me just now felt like I was staring at a stranger, someone I never truly knew.

Jorge burst into the room, his voice sharp. “Peggie, are you okay? Did Deanna hurt you again?”

Peggie’s eyes shifted to me. “Jake, maybe Deanna lashed out because she was embarrassed. I’ll forgive her for the sake of you.”

“You’re too kind!” Jorge cut her off, his voice full of anger. “That tramp is nothing but trouble, and you’re still defending her? She knows you’re easy to push around–that’s why she dares to act so reckless!”

He turned toward me, his tone urgent. “Jake, you can’t let Deanna anywhere near Peggie again! She has surgery tomorrow–she can’t handle any more stress!”

“Enough.” My voice was flat.

I glanced at Peggie but didn’t hug her and comfort her the way I used to.

“You need to focus on your surgery tomorrow. Don’t think too much! Jorge, your job is to take care of Peggie. That’s all.”

Without another word, I strode toward the door.

Just as I reached the corner of the hallway, someone grabbed my arm. I looked back. It was Jorge. His face was tight with urgency. “Jake, Peggie’s been scalded and bullied over and over because of Deanna. And now you’re just walking away? She needs you.”

I kept my expression cold. “What she needs right now is a doctor.”

But you’re her medicine, Jake. Without you, she’ll die.”

There it was again–the same line that had chained me to Peggie all this time.

Those words had made me spoil her, protect her, and put her above everything else. Even above Deanna.

Because of this, I didn’t go to save Deanna on the day we held the ceremony. And because of that, she was taken and violated by those rogues.

The thought clawed my heart into pieces.

“Jorge,” I said, my tone cutting, “I’m not paying you to lecture me. Do your job. If you cross the line again, I’ll find someone else.”

His face froze in disbelief. His grip loosened, his hand falling slowly to his side.

After a long silence, he finally spoke, voice strained. “I understand.”

I didn’t stay another second but drove straight to Spade A.

The moment I pushed the door open, the heavy smell of alcohol mixed with jazz music hit me.

I went straight to my private booth. Terence was already there, waiting.

Terence sat beside me, trying to tell me to slow down.

I shot him a look, and he went quiet.

Terence’s POV:

Something was really wrong with Jake tonight.

He didn’t call Robert or any of the guys–just me.

And the second he sat down, he started drinking nonstop.

I glanced at the floor. Empty bottles of expensive liquor were scattered everywhere.

If he kept the pace up, we’d be carrying him out of here in a body bag.

Finally, I couldn’t hold back anymore. “Jake, what happened?”

He lifted his head. His eyes were bloodshot. Clearly, he was drunk.

After a long pause, he rasped, “The day Peggie and I had that ceremony, Deanna was kidnapped.”

“Yeah, but I thought you said it was fake.”

I remembered that day.

Me, Robert, and the rest of Jake’s childhood buddies had shown up.

But we all knew Peggie’s little tricks. Within ten minutes, we made excuses and left.
