Jake’s POV:

Luis walked in front, followed closely by two High Council elders in charge of land divisions.

Recently, a huge project was in the worksan international airport planned for the east side of the city. In the werewolf world, this was a major deal.

Both the Olsendreich Pack and the Mooncrown Pack were competing for it.

The moment I saw Luis, the alcohol in my system seemed to burn off by half.

For weeks, I’d been working nonstop, not only to avoid Deanna but also because my company was facing its biggest crisis yet.

For months, Mooncrown Pack had gone crazy targeting us.

They snatched away several of our core projects. They even stole our business partners with all sorts of tricks. Losses had already gone way past the danger line.

Sure, the two packs had always competed. But Mooncrown had never attacked this hard before.

As I watched Luis walking alongside those elders, my stomach dropped.

I didn’t need to guess. The airport project would probably end up in his hands too.

Worse still, I remembered how Luis had recently invested 80 billion dollars in Deanna. That thought alone made my mood even darker.

Terence noticed Luis as well. He tugged at my arm and whispered, “Jake, let’s head this way.”

Move.I shook off his hand coldly, straightened my back, and walked directly toward the elevators.

I wasn’t the kind of coward to hide from an enemy.

As we got closer, I saw Luis send his men off with the elders.

He turned around to find me standing directly in front of him.

His eyes flicked past me to my back, noticing it was only me and Terence. A look of disappointment flashed in his gaze.

Terence shifted awkwardly and greeted him, Mr. Eaton, long time no see.

Luis finally pulled his gaze back. He answered with a casual grunt. Mmm.

I stared at him hard. He finally looked at me, his expression flat and unreadable.

For a long moment, we just locked eyes. Then I broke the silence. Luis.

My voice was sharp. Should I thank you for all the careyou’ve given my company lately? Or maybe I should thank you for the money you invested in my fiancée?

I made sure to emphasize the word fiancée.

Luis smirked, a cold curve forming on his lips. I did give Deanna that investment. You’re just her exboyfriend. Isn’t it a little strange for you to be the one thanking me?

The word exboyfriendhit me like a punch.

My composure nearly cracked from his jab.

Lately, the news of Deanna and me breaking up has spread all over the werewolf world.

Even though she seems firm about it, I still believe in us.

After five years together, her feelings can’t just vanish.

If I lower my pride a little and make the effort, I know she’ll come back to me.

Luis, maybe you don’t know this,I said, forcing a smile. Deanna and I are about to hold our mating ceremony. I’ll officially mark her then. As her future mate, I have every right to speak for her.

Luis’s brow furrowed, and a wave of alpha pressure rolled off him.

I refused to back down and released my power against his.

Terence quickly stepped between us, gripping my arm. Mr. Eaton, sorry. He’s had too much to drink.

I shoved his hand away and kept prodding. Don’t worry, Luis. You’ll get an invitation. Make sure your family comes to witness our happiness.
