Deanna’s POV:

I looked at the plate in front of me and asked, Is this for me?

Luis raised an eyebrow. He set down the tool he had been using to crack open crab legs, picked up a damp towel, and slowly wiped his fingers clean.

Then he reached over with his long fingers and gently brushed away a bit of food left at the corner of my mouth.

Deanna,he said softly, you need to start getting used to it. You’re my girlfriend now, right?

A faint smile played at the corner of his eyes as he looked at me.

blinked, then scooped up a bite of crab meat.

t tasted amazing, and it made me feel lighter inside.

That was when the phone rang.

glanced at the screenit was Jake’s sister, Thora Olson.

Back when I had first returned to the pack, I’d been sent to a training program at Werewolf Academy.

Thora had been my classmate, and we’d gotten along well. She even helped me chase after Jake at the time.

But after she left to study abroad, we barely kept in touch.

The ringtone kept ringing.

Out of the corner of my eye, I stole a glance at the man across from me.

Luis was resting his chin on one hand, his eyes dark and unreadable as he studied me.

I quickly hit the decline button.

But the phone rang again.

Not answering?

Luis asked casually, tapping his fingers lightly against his knee.

I pressed my lips together, then steeled myself to pick up.

Deanna.Thora’s voice burst through the speaker, sharp and anxious. Jake’s sick. Can you come see him?

Her voice was so loud I lifted a hand as if to block it.

Judging from Luis’s expression, he had already heard every word.

I lowered my voice. Thora, I can’t right now.

Thora’s POV:

I stood outside the door of a private hospital room with the phone pressed to my ear.

I had only just returned from overseas when I heard Jake had collapsed at work and been rushed here.

He had strictly forbidden the doctors from calling our family.

For now, only his friends and I knew.

Normally, as a highranked alpha, Jake shouldn’t get sick so easily. But the doctors explained he had been staying up late for weeks, barely eating real meals.

On top of that, he drank too much. It all caught up with himsevere migraines, a bleeding ulcer, and a chain of other problems.

Just then, a nurse came out after setting up a fresh IV.

Through the crack in the door, I saw him lying on the bed, his face pale as paper.

In the past, it didn’t matter if it was something smallJake didn’t even have to step into a hospital.

If he had the slightest problem, Deanna would be there instantly, fussing over him, treating him like he was the most precious thing in her world.

But today, when I walked in, the only people in the room were Robert and Terence.

Where’s Deanna?I demanded. Jake’s in the hospitalwhy isn’t she here?

Robert gave me a guilty look and said quietly, She and Jake are fighting. They might be breaking up.

That’s impossible,I snapped back.

Deanna would never leave my brother. She loves him so much she’d risk her life for him. I was the one who helped them get together in the first place.

Robert snorted. Why not? She’s grown a backbone. She forgets the only reason she’s standing steady in her pack is because of her being Jake’s fiancée. Now she’s got a temper, throwing a fit over every little thing, always trying to hold something over Jake.

Shut up.Jake’s voice came low and rough from the bed.

I didn’t believe a single word Robert said.

When Jake closed his eyes again, I slipped out quietly and called Deanna.

Deanna, what’s going on? This is Jake we’re talking about, your beloved. You know his bad temperdon’t take it to heart. He’s in the hospital now with a migraine and a stomach ulcer. You have to come quickly and check on him.

There was silence on the other end for a long time. Finally, Deanna’s voice came through. Thora, we broke up. The doctors will take care of him in the hospital. That’s all I’m going to say. We’ll talk another time.

Hey, Deanna! Deanna!

I called on the phone, but she had already hung up.
