Chapter 68 The Argument
Deanna’s POV:
After I hung up the phone, the air felt heavy, like the pressure in the room had suddenly dropped.
I pretended nothing had happened and kept eating. But then Luis gave a low, meaningful laugh.
“Your beloved?”
I choked a little and glanced up at him.
Luis didn’t even move, but the pressure he gave off made a chill crawl down my back.
Then he spoke, “He’s sick, so he calls you? What are you? A healer?”
“Probably dialed the wrong number,” I lied, keeping my face straight.
“I turned Thora down anyway.”
Luis studied me for a few seconds. “If I wasn’t here, would you still turn her down?”
I pressed my lips together and stayed silent.

His hand suddenly clamped around my chin, forcing me to lift my face. His grip was firm, impossible to resist, like the overbearing pheromone radiated from his body, holding me completely in place. “Talk.”
I looked straight at him, my voice calm.
“Luis, even if we’re dating, people still need private space. Don’t you think you’re crossing a line?”
He gave a short laugh, brows drawing together. “Crossing a line?”
Just then, a sharp ringtone cut through the heavy silence.
Luis casually glanced at his phone, then swept his cold gaze over me.
I refused to show weakness. I stared right back at him, refusing to back down.
Finally, he released my chin and stood. His long legs carried him to the marble balcony, where he picked up the call.
I let out a breath of relief and lowered my head, going back to my meal. Every so often, I glanced through the glass window at the man outside.
Luis stood outside, his tall frame silhouetted against the night sky.
Broad shoulders, long legs, dressed in black casual attire. Normally, he came across as laid–back, even a little devilish.
But now, there was something darker about him, something that radiated the pure control and authority of a pure–blood Alpha.
I had to admit–I wasn’t ready for a new relationship.
Still, I pondered about the whole situation. If Jake was upset, what would I have done?

Back then, just the slightest crease in his brow was enough to make me drop everything and rush to comfort him. I’d bend over backward to make him smile.
That was how small I’d once been.
And because of that, now–deep down–I wanted to be different.
Looking at Luis standing on the balcony, something clicked in me..
I realized I shouldn’t bring old feelings into a new relationship.
Puddy let out a soft bark,
I followed the sound and looked down at him. I stroked his head. “Good boy,” I said. “Your dad seems a little angry.”
Puddy considerately pressed his fluffy head into my palm like he understood.
I glanced back at the table. The food was spread out everywhere. Fresh crab meat Luis had just picked apart sat on a plate.
Enough, Deanna. Why ruin your life over a half–dead ex?
I put down my fork, stood up, and walked toward the balcony.
As I approached, Luis’s low, angry voice carried over.
“You can’t close this deal without me?” he asked.
‘Did I hire you experts to do nothing? How are you doing your jobs?”
Luis’s POV:
I was on the phone when Griffin whispered that Deanna had arrived.
wrapped up the call with a few words and hung up.
The next second her soft, pale arms slid around my waist like a warm ribbon.
“Are you mad?” she asked.
Her voice was sweet and gentle.
It sounded different from the way she usually spoke. It made something in me melt.
Just those few words and the little sting, the annoyance inside me, blew away like smoke.
I muttered to myself–what a weakling.
On the outside I showed nothing, only tugging at the corner of my mouth.
“Hmph. I wouldn’t interfere with Ms. Wiley’s personal life,” I said, though my hand covered hers at my waist and I squeezed her fingers.
“But you’re my boyfriend, not someone else,” she replied.

“See? I turned my phone off. That means I don’t want to go,” she spoke softly.
“I’ve been with him longer. Some friends might still misunderstand. I’ll change their perception slowly.”
Halfway through her words I couldn’t stand it anymore. I spun, pulled her into my arms, and sealed her mouth.
Boyfriend.
That single word hit me hard; my heart jolted at it.
