Chapter 541 Stolen Breath

What in the world is this man doing?

Laura tried again to shove Weston back, palms planted firmly against his chest.

Instead, he pressed in closer, scattering light kisses from her car down the delicate line of her throat.

She trembled, a betraying sigh hovering dangerously at the edge of her lips.

Ms. Wentworth?Gavin called again.

I’mI’m here,Laura forced out the words, trying her best to sound normal. Mr. Windore and I have something to handle, so we’ll step out for a bit. Someone will collect my bag and the medicine near the table later. Sorry about this.

Her last words fluttered out on a tremor barely worthy of sound.

Weston wasn’t merely kissing her. He was sucking softly on the skin of her neck, setting sparks racing beneath it.

He understood precisely which strings to pluck to make her burn.

You sure you’re okay?Gavin asked, doubt threading his words.

I’mfine,Laura answered.

Ever since the first ring, she had kept her tone to a nearwhisper, terrified the doctor, only steps away, might overhear.

Just then, Weston’s fingertips brushed her lips, his own parting as though he meant to speak.

Laura jerked, clamping a hand over his mouth. She couldn’t allow him to make any sound.

That’sthat’s it for nowI’m hanging up!she blurted, ending the call.

Gavin stared at the silent screen, cast a thoughtful look toward the restroom, and then walked

away.

Hearing his footsteps fade, Laura exhaled in relief and tried to free her hand, but Weston pinned it to his lips.

The velvet press of his mouth against her palm turned impossibly vivid.

She frowned, twisting to pull away, yet his grip remained ironclad.

What exactly do you want?she demanded, anger and bewilderment mingling in her voice.

He lowered his lashes; a subtle tremor ran along them. His mouth descended, brushing soft, deliberate kisses against her open palm. Every light press sparked a shiver, like static electricity dancing beneath her skin.

Weston whispered, Laura, don’t fall for Gavin Huxley. If your heart insists on choosing, let it choose me instead. Please?

Laura stared at him, thunderstruck. Of all the words she had imagined coming from Weston, these had never been among them.

Didn’t you always claim to fancy attractive men?he pressed. Am I not attractive enough? Back at university, you chased me for that very reason, didn’t you?

Laura’s mouth worked soundlessly, frustration flooding her face. This isn’t about looks!

It struck her as absurd. Weston had always bristled when anyone so much as mentioned his looks, yet here he was wielding them like a bargaining chip.

Mr. Windore, being easy on the eyes doesn’t guarantee I’ll fall for you,Laura said, her tone sharp. There has never been a shortage of handsome men in this world.

She admitted to being a sucker for a pretty face, yet that hardly meant looks was all she cared about.

Most of the time, her appreciation of male beauty stopped at harmless admirationmuch like anyone lingering over a painting, wanting only another passing glance.

To her, that magnetism belonged to the realm of aesthetics, not possession; admiration never demanded ownership.

Her one exception, perhaps, had been Weston himself.

Years ago, she had pursued him almost obsessivelythe blend of his striking features and the way he dominated the debate stage, dismantling opponents with poised eloquence, had bewitched her.

Back in college, he appeared to her as though every conceivable virtue had been poured into a single vessel.

His appearance, intellect, pedigree, even the gentle courtesy with which he treated strangers— all of it seemed to align with her idea of the perfect man.

For her, it was infatuation at first sight, deepening to obsession upon the second.

So, she began her relentless courtship, refusing to take no for an answer.

No one had foreseen that the aloof campus idolso remote that most girls feared to approach himwould be captured by an ordinary girl like her.

Classmates envied her outrageous luck; some later kicked themselves for not having matched her brazen persistence.

And she, foolishly, believed Weston’s agreement to date her meant he felt something for her- at least until she overheard what he told his friends.

Learning that their relationship had been nothing more than a diversion for him snapped her awake from the dream.

Weston, I do not love you,Laura stated, each word crisp and undeniable.
