Josefina shot Big Beard a glare that could have soured milk. The burly man quickly ducked his head, his bushy beard practically trembling.
"Think harder, Big Beard," Josefina snapped, her patience wearing thin. "You can't even remember what the guy looks like? You're as useful as a screen door on a submarine! How can you be so clueless about who you're working for? You're such a blockhead!"
Big Beard's temper flared, his face reddening beneath the thick bristles. It was the first time he’d been dressed down by a woman, and his ego was taking a hit. The more he stewed, the angrier he got.
"I just do the job when the cash rolls in. I'm not his secretary, for crying out loud. How am I supposed to know what the guy looks like?" he retorted, trying to keep his cool but clearly struggling with the indignity.
Josefina's expression shifted from thunderous to almost delighted. "Secretary? He's got a secretary? You must've seen what they look like, right?"
Big Beard was caught between a rock and a hard place. Had he just spilled the beans without meaning to?
With a nervous chuckle, he said, "Saw 'em a couple of times. I handle the stuff outside the casino; don't get to meddle in the inner workings."
"Spill it, then. What does this person look like? Height, build—give me the whole nine yards," Josefina demanded, pulling out her smartphone and starting to sketch.
Drawing on his memory, Big Beard described the man's features, and in no time, Josefina's phone displayed a face. She turned the screen toward him and asked, "Is this the guy?"
Big Beard was gobsmacked. It was like she was a mind reader or some kind of artist—the likeness was uncanny!
His reaction was all the confirmation Josefina needed. She took a screenshot of the sketch and sent it to Luke with a quick message to get on the case.
"What else do you know? Spill the beans," Josefina prodded further.
Big Beard, clearly in a tight spot, stammered, "I don't know much else..."
Josefina casually showed him the wriggling worm she held in the palm of her hand, and Big Beard squealed like a stuck pig, spilling a few more details.
Once she was convinced Big Beard had nothing left to offer, Josefina stood up and decided to let Luke handle the rest.
