Lena scoffed at the idea that Josefina could uncover anything of substance. She looked at her with a mix of disdain and disbelief.
But to Lena's shock, Josefina unlocked the box and pulled out a photograph of a woman.
The moment Lena's eyes landed on the face in the picture, her world came to a standstill. Josefina’s lips curled into a triumphant smile.
"What are you up to, Josefina?" Lena shouted, her voice tinged with madness.
Josefina held the photograph steady, making sure Lena got a good look at the woman in it.
"You thought I couldn’t dig up your secrets? Well, guess what? This woman," Josefina gestured to the photo, "is your birth mother, and she's very much alive. She told me you visited her, that she begged you to stay and switch the child back, but you refused."
Desperately, Lena reached for the picture, but Josefina stepped back, leaving Lena grasping at thin air.
Suddenly, the photograph in Josefina's hand inexplicably transformed into a necklace with a pendant that swung side to side.
Lena's eyes grew hazy, losing focus as the necklace swayed. She had fallen under a spell of hypnosis, ready to answer any question Josefina asked—as long as she knew the answer.
"When did you find out your true identity, and why would you harm the Harrisons, who raised you for eighteen years?" Josefina inquired.
Lena's voice was distant as she recounted, "When I was thirteen, I got hurt and while in the hospital, I saw my blood type didn’t match my family's. I secretly did a DNA test and found out I wasn't the Harrisons’ real daughter. The following summer, when I was fourteen, some punks cornered me, but a guy named Dorian saved me. He said he knew who I really was and promised to help me. He’d cook for me when my folks were too busy. I fell for him, and he for me."
Josefina was silent, suspecting that this Dorian was the mastermind behind the entire scheme.
