CHAPTER 52
I laid back down, staring at the ceiling, knowing that there was something wrong. Knowing that there is a piece to the puzzle that I’m missing. And where the hell are my parents? They weren’t in that town. They haven’t made any threats that I’m aware of.
I know they’ve increased patrols but that’s just standard and basic because of what happened to me.
So there was definitely more to the story that I couldn’t explain. But I would have to figure it out, even if it meant tearing apart every lead, every scrap of information, every shadow that might hide the truth. Answers were out there, and I wasn’t about to let them slip past me.
“You really had us scared there for a minute.” Gage said, shaking his head.
“Yeah, trust me–I was scared too. I honestly didn’t think he’d let me live.” I replied, trying to force a grin.
“Well, to be fair, he was trying to kill you.” Asher said, his tone dry.
“Smooth observation, Sherlock.” I shot back.
Arlo smirked. “Asher filled us in about the takedown. Nicely done.”
I wiggled my wrists. “Thanks. Not bad for someone accessorizing with silver chains, right?”
“We’re just so glad that you’re alright. We were all going out of our minds.” Petra said.
“I’m sorry. I’m really sorry that this happened to all of you.” I said.
“Don’t worry about us. We were only knocked out.” Gage said.
“Yeah. I know. But still, the effects of wolfsbane and then waking up to find your son shot with a silver bullet.” I said.
“Well, by the time we woke up we were in the hospital. We still didn’t get a clear answer on how we got there.” Dennis said.
“I mind linked them before Spencer took me. I told them Asher was shot and the Alpha family
own. They would have waited to make sure that Spencer and his men had left before the went into the packhouse to get you.” I explained.

“So, you’re the one that saved us. If you didn’t do that then Asher would definitely be dead.” Dennis said.
“I knew he was going to take me. And if Asher didn’t get help he was going to die.” I said.

“We, you’ve got nothing to worry about now. We’ve double patrols and no one is getting in without us knowing about it. Or us being prepared. We know that your parents are going to be more than pissed off now that Spencer is dead.” Gage said.
“Yeah. Just something else they can blame on me. But then again, I actually did kill this one.”
I said.
“And you look so upset about it too.” Asher mocked. But I just looked at him and smiled.
I wasn’t upset. I wasn’t feeling the least bit guilty about what I did. Not after seeing those other girls and how long they had been trapped in that coal mine. He was collecting girls and using them as leverage against their families, while he was abusing them in every way imaginable, showing no mercy or remorse. Whatever was going to happen to Spencer, he deserved it, every single bit. Instead of coming back here and facing execution, he was killed at the scene, and honestly, it was the only outcome that made sense. There was overwhelming evidence to prove that he was a truly vile man, so nothing was going to happen to me because of it. Dennis and Asher were going to make absolutely sure of that, keeping watch over every step I took, making sure no harm could ever come to me again.
“So, when can I get out of here?” I asked.
“Not yet. They gotta make sure that you’re healing from the surgery and the silver is out of your system.” Asher said.
“I just want to go home.” I said.
“I know. Just a little while longer.” He said.
Petra excused herself and went out to the hallway but she came back a couple of seconds later and stayed near the door.
“Trinny. There are some people here that want to see you. Are you up for a few more visitors?
She asked.
”
“Sure.” I said, looking at her strangely.
She opened the door and I saw several girls walk into my room, all wearing hospital gowns as they were also receiving treatment after being locked up for months in the coal mine.
“Hi.” said, surprised as I tried to sit up.
I struggled a little, so Asher stepped in to steady me.
“You probably don’t know our names… we were all too frightened to speak before. I’m Elsa. We just wanted to come and thank you–for everything you did. At first, when you arrived, we thought you might get us all hurt because you kept trying to find a way out.” Elsa admitted,

her voice trembling slightly.
“You don’t need to thank me.” I said gently. “It was just the right thing to do.”
“You know, I was the first one he locked away. My father told me I’d been there for six months. I… I didn’t even realize.” She said quietly.
“Six months?” I asked softly, shocked.

“Yeah. He was forcing my father to move drugs through his pack. A lot of people lost their lives because of it. The drugs that the master was selling… they were deadly.” Elsa explained, her eyes downcast.
I glanced at Asher, and he immediately recognized the look on my face–the way my mind was racing, trying to piece it all together.
“Well.” I said after a pause, my voice warm, “I’m just so glad you all made it out alive. Are your families here with you now?”
“Yes. The doctor said once we’re cleared, we can finally go home.” She replied, a small hopeful smile breaking through.
“Good. Make sure you keep in touch.” I said kindly. “I want to see how things turn out for all of you.”
“We will. And… thank you again.” Elsa whispered.
I could see that the other girls were still scared and intimidated. I didn’t blame them. They’d been through months of hell. But it was good to see that they had been reunited with their families and they were going to be going home. Where they belong.
