Franklin had been busy lately. He had barely eaten when another call came, and he stepped out again.
While he was outside, Julia seemed to think of something. “By the way, Isabella–school starts Monday. How about Auntie takes you?”
Isabella looked apologetic. “Sorry, Auntie Julia. I already asked Mommy to take me, and she said yes.”
“I see. Julia said, and didn’t insist.
Sunday night, just as Maggie finished dinner and was about to rest, Isabella called.
As soon as Maggie picked up, Isabella chirped, “Mommy, tomorrow morning Daddy and I will come to your place. Then you and Daddy can take me to school together.”
“Okay. Mommy knows.”
The next morning, Franklin and Isabella arrived not long after Maggie finished breakfast.
Maggie grabbed her car keys to head out, but Isabella tugged her toward Franklin’s car. “No time, Mommy–quick, get in!”
“I still have to go back to the office later,” Maggie said. “It’ll be inconvenient without a car. I’ll drive myself and meet you at the school-”
Tll take you to Cole afterward,” Franklin said.
Maggie was about to refuse, but Isabella bounced, still pulling her along. “Yeah, let Daddy take you! Come on, Mommy!”
Maggie frowned slightly, hesitated a second, then got in.
She was wearing a couture white lace dress today, serene and elegant–perfectly suiting her temperament.
After buckling in, Isabella couldn’t help gushing, “Mommy, you look so pretty today!”
Hearing that, Franklin glanced over twice as well.
“Thank you,” Maggie said evenly.
He looked again, then asked, “What time is your meeting at Wilson Group this afternoon?”
Three.”
“Need me to send a car to pick you up?”
Send a car? If she were seen getting into his, it could expose their relationship. Then again, given the joint project between their companies–and the recent increase in public interactions between them–it wouldn’t be hard to explain away if someone spotted her in a Wilson Group car.
Regardless, she didn’t need him to go out of his way.
“No need. I can take someone else’s car,” she said.
“All right”
After that, it was mostly Isabella and Maggie chatting; Franklin stayed quiet.
At school, Franklin and Maggie walked Isabella in together. Side by side, they made a striking pair and drew plenty of looks.
Seeing both “parents” dropping Isabella off, the teacher assumed their relationship had improved, and was genuinely happy for Maggie. “Miss Miller, long time
no see.”
“Long time no see,” Maggie replied.
They chatted briefly, then, after some reminders to Isabella, Franklin and Maggie left.
Once they were out of sight, Maggie lowered her head to open a ride–hailing app.
