Yulia disliked Julia–and, to be fair, she disliked Franklin too.

After needling Julia, she turned to Franklin with the same pleasant smile. “I’ve often heard how devoted Mr. Wilson is to Miss Brown, taking her everywhere he goes. Seeing you today, I can confirm the rumors weren’t exaggerated at all.”

Though her words were barbed, she spoke them lightly, so anyone unaware might truly think she was praising their relationship.

At that moment, someone came over to chat and, overhearing, chimed in with a laugh, “Yes, Mr. Wilson really is wonderful to Miss Brown.”

Yulia gave Franklin a cool glance but let it drop.

After all, this was Cole’s big night. It wasn’t worth stirring up a scene because of the two of them.

Johnny and Maggie clearly felt the same.

Johnny smiled thinly. “Mr. Wilson, my teacher and I have something to take care of. Please excuse us.”

Julia, of course, understood exactly what Yulia’s “I’ve heard so much about you” meant.

Her face didn’t look good.

Yulia had mocked Julia and hadn’t spared Franklin either, yet Franklin’s expression showed no anger. After Johnny spoke, Franklin maintained his polite smile. “Of course–carry on.”

A few minutes later, Yulia lowered her voice to Maggie. “How long until the cooling–off period ends?”

“Less than half a month,” Maggie answered honestly.

“Don’t let anything go wrong this time,” Yulia said, lips quirking.

“It shouldn’t,” Maggie replied. From what her teacher had said, barring surprises, she wouldn’t be needed at the base for the next month.

“That’s good.”

Relieved, Yulia pinched Maggie’s cheek lightly. “Once it’s official, I’ll throw you a celebration.”

Maggie smiled. “All right.”

The banquet rolled on.

After that, Maggie and Johnny were busy almost without pause, moving through the hall and greeting guests.

Franklin and Julia didn’t come back to disturb them.

Franklin, for his part, was also busy; people kept approaching him.

His mood didn’t seem dampened in the least by the Nolans‘ coolness.

He conversed cheerfully and, every so often, glanced to either side.

Julia stayed by his side.

Rex didn’t keep seeking Julia out, but he hovered nearby.
