**Freedom 462**
**Chapter 462**
Hugo stood there, utterly speechless. “T-two billion?” he stammered, his eyes wide with disbelief as the weight of the figure sank in.
Old Mrs. Miller and Helen, usually composed, were visibly rattled by the revelation. The atmosphere in the room shifted, thickening with a mix of awe and confusion.
Old Mrs. Miller turned her gaze to Maggie, who had been quietly absorbing every word. “Maggie, come take a look,” she urged, her voice a blend of excitement and concern.
Maggie, though silent, had been fully aware of the conversation unfolding around her. When she first unwrapped the box, the moment her fingers brushed against its luxurious surface, she had sensed that Franklin’s gift was far from ordinary.
Yet, she never could have anticipated such opulence.
Helen was right; the diamond Franklin had gifted her sparkled with a brilliance that eclipsed the one she had previously purchased. It was as if the stone itself held the light of a thousand stars, its clarity unmatched.
And if Helen was suggesting that two billion was merely a conservative estimate, Maggie couldn’t help but wonder just how high the true value might soar.
As she observed the mix of surprise and calm on Maggie’s face, both Hugo and Old Mrs. Miller realized that she too was taken aback by the magnitude of Franklin’s extravagant gesture.
“So what do we do now?” Hugo finally broke the silence, his brow furrowing in concern. “Should we return it?”
Given the impending divorce, the thought of keeping something so lavish felt almost absurd. How could she possibly hold onto such a treasure when her relationship with Franklin was on the brink of collapse?
“Keep it,” Old Mrs. Miller declared, her voice firm as she closed the velvet box with a decisive snap.
“Think of it as a legacy for Isabella. One day, when she’s grown, you can pass it on to her. If you refuse it now, it’ll only end up benefiting someone else.”
The implication was clear; that “someone else” was Julia, and the thought of that made Maggie’s stomach twist.
Maggie nodded slowly, her mind racing. “All right,” she replied, her voice steady despite the whirlwind of emotions inside her.
She shared the same sentiment; while the value of the gift was astonishing, her heart remained resolute.
Why had Franklin chosen to send her something so extravagant? The answer eluded her, but she found herself indifferent to the question.
After breakfast, she ascended the stairs, placing the box nonchalantly on her cabinet as if it were just another trinket. Without a backward glance, she set off for work, her mind shifting gears to the tasks awaiting her.
Of course, Johnny hadn’t forgotten her birthday either.
Just as she received the flowers, Glen happened to walk over. His eyes flickered to the card, and a hint of disappointment shadowed his smile.
After the cake festivities, the office gradually returned to its usual rhythm.
Yet, in the following ten minutes, Maggie found herself on the receiving end of three more bouquets.
One was from Jessica, bursting with color and cheer.
Another from Glen, also roses, but delivered discreetly; he didn’t want to stir up any gossip by presenting them to her directly.
Though they worked in the same office, he had opted to send someone else to deliver them on his behalf.
He had contemplated giving her something more significant than mere flowers, but he hesitated, knowing that she might refuse even the roses. So, he held back, choosing caution over boldness.
The third bouquet arrived from Harry, adding to the growing collection of floral tributes.
With each delivery, Maggie felt a mix of gratitude and confusion, her heart fluttering with the unexpected attention on her special day.
