**Freedom 469**
**Chapter 469**
That evening, as the moon hung high in the sky, casting a silver glow over the city, Maggie and Johnny found themselves still immersed in work at the office. The clock ticked away, and the hum of the fluorescent lights filled the air, a constant reminder of the hours slipping by. Finally, they packed up their things, the weight of the day’s tasks still lingering on their shoulders as they stepped out into the cool night.
Upon arriving at the Miller residence, a sense of warmth enveloped Maggie as she entered. She made her way to the cozy living room, where Old Mrs. Miller sat, her knitting needles clicking rhythmically. Maggie settled into the chair across from her, eager for a brief conversation. “How was your day, dear?” Mrs. Miller asked, her eyes twinkling with curiosity.
“It was long, but productive,” Maggie replied, a small smile creeping onto her lips. They exchanged stories about their days, laughter mingling with the gentle creaking of the old house, until Maggie felt the pull of her own thoughts and the need for solitude.
As she ascended the staircase, her phone vibrated insistently in her pocket, breaking the comforting silence. She pulled it out and saw several messages from Isabella lighting up the screen.
Curiosity piqued, she opened the messages to find a delightful series of photographs. In each one, Isabella beamed with joy, her smile radiating happiness. Franklin, Harry, and Levi flanked her in the pictures, their laughter almost audible through the screen.
Then came a voice message that made Maggie’s heart swell. “Mom, I’m at the hot springs with Dad and the others! What are you doing?” Isabella’s excitement was palpable.
Maggie quickly typed a response, her fingers flying over the screen. “Mom’s about to take a shower. Have fun!” Once she hit send, she set the phone down, feeling a mixture of warmth and longing.
After a refreshing shower, she wrapped herself in a fluffy towel and settled down with a book, hoping to escape into its pages. She glanced at her work notes, mentally preparing for the tasks ahead. Just as she felt the heaviness of sleep begin to pull at her, another notification blinked to life on her phone.
It was Isabella once more.
Intrigued, Maggie opened the message to find another photo, this one taken indoors. Three exquisitely crafted straw dragonflies were the centerpiece, their delicate wings shimmering in the soft light. But it was the corner of the shot that caught her attention—a glimpse of a designer handbag and a men’s suit jacket draped casually over the bed.
Recognition struck her like a bolt of lightning. That handbag—she had seen it before. Julia had proudly flaunted that Hermès limited-edition piece, a treasure worth a small fortune. A pang of unease flickered within Maggie; Isabella was blissfully unaware of the implications.
Moments later, Isabella’s voice chimed in again. “Mom, look! Dad and Uncle Harry made these dragonflies for me! Aren’t they pretty?” The joy in her tone was infectious.
Maggie’s heart softened, and she replied, “Yes, they’re very pretty.”
Just as she set her phone down, it rang. Isabella’s name lit up the screen, and Maggie sighed, knowing she couldn’t resist. “Hello?” she answered, a hint of weariness in her voice.
