At Cameron’s words, the initial surprise at seeing him fades. My hands clench into fists.

An explanation? I can’t believe he’s asking me for one like I’m the one who cheated and broke our marriage

“You still have my keys?” I ask with a frown. After three years, I didn’t think Cameron would keep anything of

mine.

“You can’t just walk in here unannounced like you own the place.“I murmur blankly,

For a fleeting moment, I wonder if Blake noticed Cameron slipping in. Kael’s going to be fuming mad when he finds out about this. And the fallout will be ugly.

I shake the thought off quickly. I’m not responsible for Cameron’s trespassing.

“I didn’t think you’d invite me over. Or accept my invitation.” Cameron replies. His tone is casual, but his voice is laced with something more…like that is more than enough justification for why he broke into my

apartment.

“And you can’t truly expect me to do nothing about this…” He trails off, searching for the right words.

“Why are you with Kael, Laila?” Cameron demands finally, his eyes narrowing. “You got married to someone else?! What exactly has gotten into you?”

My brow quirks and I cross my arms over my chest. “Last I checked, we’ve been divorced for three years. What I do is none of your business.”

Cameron’s frown deepens, “Kael’s gotten into your head, hasn’t he?”

“Listen Laila, you know he’ll do anything to undermine me. Don’t tell me you’re in cahoots with him now…”

“He…is my husband.” I enunciate each word clearly, because it seems Cameron is having difficulty understanding the reality.

I don’t believe that.” Cameron shakes his head in disagreement.

“I know you Laila.” He chuckles in quiet disbelief.

Is it just me? Or he sounds… almost bitter.

Cameron tucks his hands into his pocket. Like he’s trying to appear more confident than he feels. “I’m not buying it.”

He stalks over to me, his eyes narrowed. He doesn’t stop until he’s just a few paces away, close enough to touch if either one of us reaches out.

I should back away, but for some reason I don’t. My feet stay rooted in place, like they have a mind of their

own.

His familiar scent floods my senses. Sandalwood, pine and a dash of something earthy.

“I don’t believe you’re back with Kael, Laila.” His tone has dropped lower, almost inaudible, “I knew it, the moment I saw you at the entrance of the ballroom…” His eyes search mine.

“I knew once our eyes met that you’ve missed me, just as I have you. You’re back for me…” He closes the distance so he’s now close enough, I can feel the warmth of his breath.

My pulse spikes, from fear, anger…or something long buried, I can’t tell. But I keep a straight face, my nails digging into my palms.

“I’m not sure what you’re implying, but you’re making me very uncomfortable at the moment, Mr Blackwood.” My voice is a monotone, “You’re my husband’s brother. But we’re not acquainted enough to break into my apartment in broad daylight.”

Cameron’s jaw tightens, and he shakes his head in disbelief. “Mr Blackwood? Really Laila?”

“Do you know how long I’ve searched for you Laila? You…disappeared.” Cameron accuses, his tone has gotten sharper. “And all along, you’ve been with my brother?”

“You should leave.” My tone is chilling cold, outlined with a finality that dares him to test me. “Our past is all over the news. I don’t think anyone would appreciate us being together.”

Cameron doesn’t move. He doesn’t even flinch. “Do you think I care about that?”

He takes a step closer and I back away, frowning. “Kael…he can’t be the man you need, Laila. And you know that.” His voice carries a certainty, like he can see right through me.

“What would you know about what I need?” I reply, scoffing beneath my breath. “Go home to your wife, Cameron. This is getting boring now.”

His jaws tighten, like he’s about to say something, but he doesn’t. He just searches my eyes, and whatever he hopes to find, he will realise it’s long gone.

Cameron exhales slowly. “I’m not here to pick a fight, Laila.” His tone is still tight.

I can tell he’s holding back. But what exactly is he holding back?

“I came to see you. I needed…to see you. To understand, how you could do this to me.”

I laugh softly, “Do what? Move on?”

His gaze darkens. “Don’t play dumb with me Laila. I know you’re with him for revenge.”

“What does it matter if I am?” I reply with a question of my own. “I’m nothing to you, Cameron. And you’re nothing to me.”

“Just two strangers…who used to fuck.” I smirk at the look of surprise in Cameron’s eyes.

“I thought… I had time.” He murmurs, more to himself than to me. “I thought… you’d come back to me when you were ready.”

He’s happily married to Sarah, isn’t he? The woman he tossed me out for. So what was this reaction? Why does he look so… heartbroken?

Cameron’s words catch me off guard. But I don’t let it show. “I’m Kael’s woman now. As you’ve seen for yourself.”

Cameron flinches visibly and I almost regret saying that last phrase.

That finally gets through to him because Cameron backs up a few steps, putting some distance between us.

“You’ve changed, Laila. You’re not the same woman I loved…” He trails off, like he hadn’t meant to let it slip.

“Neither are you.”

For a moment, neither of us moves. Cameron just stares at me, then he turns and heads for the door without another word.

As the door closes behind him, I exhale a breath I didn’t realise I was holding.

My phone buzzes again, grateful for the distraction, I pull it out and it’s a text from Kael.

“You must have gotten my gift by now.”

My heart runs cold. Kael…he already knows.

Another buzz and a second text pops in.

“Come here, Laila. Don’t make me come get you myself.”
