The faucet is open and running, but not nearly as fast as the wheels turning in my head.

I don’t notice the heat of the running water until a searing pain radiates from my hand, drawing my
attention.
Glancing down, I notice the skin around my hand is already singed and red. And it takes me another moment to realize that in my distraction, I’d carelessly set the faucet to the wrong temperature.
I shake off the droplets of water, grabbing a paper towel to dry my hands, successfully aggravating the pain of the burn.
The pain doesn’t faze me…pain has always been a part of my life. I was raised to be the Alpha of Blackwood Corporation… it’s made sure I don’t faze easily.
So what exactly has me so frustrated?
A woman. Just a woman. ‘Laila fucking Blackwood.’
And not Cameron’s part of the Blackwood name. Mine.
Laila left the meeting without a word. She’d walked out without even glancing in my direction after rendering all the executives, including Cameron, speechless.
I didn’t see it coming. She’s been docile for three years, I thought I had her under control.
How wrong I was.
I can’t even decide if I’m infuriated or intrigued.
If I believed I’d given the media something to fuss over, I was completely wrong. My wife handed them something even better.
In just a few minutes, Blackwood Co is flocked by hundreds of reporters and media outlets. They’re blocking the entrance and exits, clamoring over each other for a chance to corner Cameron.
I’d planned for the questions directed at Cameron to be something along the lines of, ‘Why was your divorce never publicized? And why did you divorce Laila Blackwood?‘
Instead, the question going around the media is,
‘You and Mrs Laila Blackwood were seen exiting a high–rise apartment complex seconds apart from each other. Speculations point to an ongoing affair. Can you comment on this?‘
Cameron is still in the spotlight. He’d made a fuss of his true mate bond with Sarah and now he’ll face even worse backlash.

His position as CEO and Alpha of Blackwood Pack will be questioned much earlier than I had planned.
And Laila did all this by willingly dragging her name and reputation through the mud. She’s nothing like the quiet, doting wife she was with Cameron.
All of that was just a facade for the cunning vixen hidden underneath.
I should be thrilled at Cameron’s predicament, but instead I find myself fuming.
She’d turned the meeting with Cameron I orchestrated into a scandal, successfully dooming Cameron, and making me out to be a pathetic man that can’t satisfy his own wife, with little to no effort.
Or maybe…maybe something did happen between them in that apartment. Just like the whole continent is speculating.
The thoughts are spinning around in my head and each possibility is more absurd than the last.
I grunt softly, running a hand through my hair as I head back out into my office, only to find Cameron sitting across from my table.
Of course. It just has to be the last person I want to see.
Blake is standing by the door, looking apologetic. I shake my head slightly, dismissing him. Blake leaves without a word.
I walk over to my chair, ignoring Cameron until he breaks the silence himself.
“You did this, didn’t you?” Cameron accuses flatly, his eyes burning with rage.
I wish I had. It was all Laila. I can’t even understand it myself. But I’d be damned before I tell him that.
I don’t respond. I simply fix him with a blank stare.
“I know you hate me Kael, but how could you?” He hisses, “Did you even think for a moment about who this affects the most? Laila will be torn apart by the media.”
He doesn’t wait for me to respond.
“But you don’t care about that, do you?” He accuses, “The only reason you married her is to get at me. If you think parading her around in front of me is going to…”
“I didn’t do it for you.” I cut in, leaning back against my chair. “But judging by your reaction, you still have feelings for Laila.”
My tone is relaxed. But I don’t try to withhold the edge that slips into it. “You should know better, Cam.”
Cameron purses his lips. “Don’t play dumb with me Kael. We both know what this is about.”
“You hate me for testifying against you. And you’ve held a grudge for more than a decade. And now you married my…” Cameron trails off, leaving his words hanging.

I lean forwards, “Your… what?” I ask, daring him to say the word we both know is stuck on the tip of his
tongue.
But he doesn’t. He’s too much of a coward to admit it.
The silence stretches for long enough to fuel the tension between us, until it’s almost palpable.
Finally, he says, “Listen Kael, if you want to pick a fight, I won’t back down.”
“But I won’t stand by and watch you using Laila as a tool to fulfill your sadistic intentions and pleasures.”
A slow grin spreads across my lips. “Why do you care what I do and do not do? Last I checked, my ring is the one she has on.”
I tilt my head to the side, “I’m sure you wish you were the one between those thighs…”
Cameron’s gaze darkens, his jaws work and the muscles tighten.
“But you are nothing more than Laila’s past. That’s what you are now… that’s what you’ll always be.”
I sit up. “I’ll take care of my wife’s safety. And you should redirect your concerns to salvaging your reputation…or what’s left of it.”
My voice drops lower, “It’s not fun if I take everything back so easily. I also expect a lot from you, Cam… this will be your only chance to prove yourself worthy of the title you stole a decade ago.”
“Don’t disappoint me.”
