Chapter 24

An unfamiliar man gets down from the driver’s seat.

:

Who are you?I ask, my brows furrowing into a frown.

He’s dressed in much the same way as an employee in Kael’s club, but I don’t recognise him. I’ve never seen. this man before, but it is unmistakably one of Kael’s cars.

The man inclines his head slightly, his expression apologetic. I’m Greg. I work at the club, Ms Laila. Blake had to take Kael somewhere urgently and couldn’t make it in time. He asked me to pick you up instead.”

I frown at that. This is the first time Kael’s sending anyone other than Blake to drive me and Liam, and he’d done it without leaving any prior information whatsoever.

Kael is too particular a man and knowing his line of work, he’s made too many enemies and is extremely cautious with Liam’s safety. So this is unlike him.

For reasons I can’t quite place my finger on, I feel uneasy.

Pulling out my phone, I dial Kael’s number, eyeing the strange man warily. After the first ring, it goes straight to voicemail.

Liam’s dozed off, his soft snores muted by the sound of cars driving past.

I can still feel Cameron’s eyes on us a short distance away. He hasn’t gotten back into the car yet, waiting to

watch us leave.

I’m not surprised. When he’s not cheating or throwing his wife out of his home, Cameron’s a typical gentleman.

Here,” Greg offers me his phone. Blake just called.”

I take it, bringing it up to my ears.

Ms Laila. It’s me.Blake’s familiar voice sounds on the other end of the phone. I’m really sorry about this. Something urgent came up and I swear it won’t happen again.”

Greg is trustworthy. He’ll take you home safely. Marie’s already waiting and the security detail at home has been doubled. So don’t be too concerned to see new faces.Blake explains in a rush,

My frown deepens. There is something off about Blake’s tone. He is usually the calm and collected one of Kael’s subordinates yet at the moment he soundsrestless.

Where’s Kael?I ask in suspicion. Why isn’t he taking his calls?

The line goes silent. Only for a moment, but a moment is long enough for me to know all I need to.

He’s hurt, isn’t he?I ask slowly,

:

It’s the most likely possibility given that he’d even doubled the security watching the house.

My hands clench at my sides. The least he could have done is stay out of trouble until Liam adjusts to the new environment, but that’s too much to ask of Kael, isn’t it?

An unpleasant thought that we might have to move comes to mind and displeasure churns in my stomach.

I’d chosen to marry Kael because he’d left me no choice, but also for Liam’s protection. But I’m beginning to wonder if the danger surrounding him is even worth it.

He said to tell you he won’t be coming home tonight, Laila. Don’t wait up.Is all Blake says and the line goes dead.

I stare at the phone for a long moment before then hand it over to Greg.

Fine then.I grumble beneath my breath. It’s none of my business anyways.”

Let’s go.I say to Greg.

He quickly pulls open the door and helps me strap Liam into the car seat Kael always carries around.

I unconsciously note Cameron’s eyes are still on us, but that is the least of my concerns. I just want to get home, take a warm bath, tuck my son in and forget any of the Blackwoods even exist.

But if Kael is really hurt

Greg closes the door before jogging over to the driver’s seat.

Just as he pulls out into the road, I ask, What happened to Kael?

Greg looked nervous. Ma’amHe begins to say but I interrupt before he can continue.

I’m his wife. Think about that before you answer me.

Greg contemplates in silence for a moment before he finally replies, I’m not certain about the details, Ma’am. But I did hear there was somenoise down in the den. Shots were fired

I nod slowly. My hands are clenched tightly. It’s not the first time Kael has been in a gun fight. It happened a few times back in Ridgeway as well and each time he’d gotten away without so much as a scratch.

It’s Kael after all, right? He isn’t just any man. He’s the feared rogue Alpha.

He’s built a name for himself outside of the Blackwood name. Not even pack Alphas stand a chance against him.

Besides, beyond our contract, Kael’s affairs are his alone. It’s not my place, neither do I care to get involved.

So why do I feel so nervous?

I shake my head slightly and push off my doubts, shifting my attention to a sleeping Liam. I slowly stroke his messy hair, in a bid to calm myself.

A half hour passes by quickly and we finally arrive at home. Marie is waiting to take Liam in and I also head in after saying thanks to Greg.

I’ll be right there to tuck him in.” I say to Marie as she takes Liam up to his room to run him a bath.

I walk into my bathroom taking my clothes off before setting the shower to warm and stepping underneath it.

I’m done in a short time and step out, picking out some pajamas from my closet. It’s at this moment my phone rings.

I glance at the caller ID. Unexpectedly, it’s Kael.

I pick it up. Hello?

The other end of the line is silent, save for Kael’s breathing. Each breath is drawn out, deeplyraggedly, almost animalistic.

Kael?I ask. Are youalright?

Still, no answer.

KaelI sigh, perching at the edge of my bed. Say something

Laila

He’s said my name many times before, but this timehe sounds different. In a way I’ve never heard him sound before.

come here

A thud echoes from the other end, and then the line goes silent.
