As I pull into the parking lot of my estate, I’m greeted by high pitched laughter and the sound of clinking glasses.
Guests? I’m not expecting any. I wasn’t told there would be any.
My brows furrow slightly as I get down from the car. My beta Josh is already waiting for me.
We had parted ways at the port and he’d come home ahead of me.
“How did it go?” He asks, referring to the set up he’d arranged for Kael without asking me.
I didn’t wish to dwell on it. All Josh does, he does with my best interest at heart. That was his duty as second in command.
I ignore his question, asking instead, “What’s that noise?”
I can already guess just what it is, but I’m hoping it’s not what I think it is.
At least this once…when I need to remind myself why I abandoned Laila all those years ago.
Josh hesitates for a moment, “It’s Ms Sarah and her friends. She received the limited edition items she ordered earlier today and threw an unboxing party in the back garden.”
My lips purse into a thin line. An unboxing party…of course. It was typical of Sarah to find every excuse to throw a lavish party.
The sound of their laughter and excitement echoes across the entire estate, stealing away the peace that is characteristic of my home.
Over the years, I’ve learnt to adjust to it. But it’s still a work in progress.
“This is what, the third time this week?” I murmur, shaking my head slightly. “It’s past Kelly’s bed time. Where is she?”
“Up in her room.” Josh relays to me.
Sarah loves her parties. And I have no trouble with that. What I do not appreciate is meeting a party for one purpose or the other whenever I get back home.
There are times when I just need some rest and some quiet. And it’s not just me.
Kelly’s always been easily startled and scared of crowds. The doctors say it’s due to her ailment and she requires a stable environment for a faster recovery.
But that never seems to stop Sarah.

Her friends are wild and reckless. They come from her old pack that don’t have the same rules as Blackwood and it shows in how careless they get with alcohol and a host of other contraband substances exclusively for shifters.
If I find it this annoying, I’m not sure how Kelly is coping right now. But Sarah is Sarah. I don’t have the energy to bother with her right now.
“She said to ask you to join the party once you arrive.” Josh adds, like he hasn’t already said enough.
“I’m good.” I decline, “Just tell her to keep it down and wrap it up early. I’ll be in Kelly’s room.”
I head inside, making my way to Kelly’s room first. I haven’t seen my daughter all day. I’d planned to pick her up from school but had then gotten sidetracked by Kael and the situation at the port.
It’s late so she’s probably asleep already. I slowly push the door open and creep in, careful not to wake her.
The moment I step through the door, a freezing cold chill greets me, stirring my wolf instincts. Kelly’s room is pitch dark and feels like an ice cave.
My brows furrow and I quickly turn on the lights, only to find my daughter huddled by the wall, a blanket thrown over her head.
The anger sets in immediately. “Who turned the heater off?!” I growl, storming over to turn it on.
Kelly whimpers at the sound of my voice, pulling the blanket tighter around herself. She’s trembling from head to toe and my heart constricts at the sight.
I hurry over to her, and as I reach for her, she flinches. Recoiling away from my touch.
“Shhh. It’s Daddy… it’s only me…” I quickly reassure her in the most gentle tone I can muster, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have yelled like that.”
Kelly lets the blanket down and glances up at me, her eyes wide and full of tears. “Daddy?”
“Yes baby, it’s just me.”
She perks up immediately, diving into my arms and I pick her up, rubbing soothing circles down her back to calm her. Her skin feels deathly cold to touch and I wince visibly, hugging her close to me to share some warmth.
“It’s so…cold Daddy…” She whimpers, clutching my jacket tightly as she shivers visibly
The anger in my veins burned stronger. A mansion full of employees and domestic staff, and no one could think to check in on Kelly?!
She was slightly more dependent for her age, but she’d survived a lot already and it’s taken a toll on her growth. Still, she’s only a child,
I’ve grown too lax with the distractions from work, even my home is in such disarray.
What is next? Will I return home to find my daughter cooking herself a meal?

“It’s okay. You’ll warm up soon.” I hush her, taking her over to her bed.

The sheets are cold to touch and grunting in displeasure, I carry Kelly in my arms out of the room and head to mine.
Once we’re inside, I settle her into my bed and pull the covers over her, tucking her in.
It takes a moment for her shivers and whimpers to stop, and the colour slowly returns to her face.
“Kelly, why was the heater off?” I ask in a much quieter tone.
Though I can already think of all the ways I’ll make this person pay.
Her eyes dart around, her lips trembling. It’s a habit of hers when she’s nervous. “I did it.”
I frown slightly. Kelly turned off the heater herself?
“Why would you? You know the cold temperature is really bad for your health.”
She looks nervous and I sigh quietly, easing my features. Taking off my jacket, I climb into bed with her, stroking her hair gently.
“It’s okay. You can tell me.”
She hesitates for a moment more before she finally admits, “So mom’s ringer goes off.”
“All the staff are off serving at mom’s party. Only Josh came to see me… I just… couldn’t sleep.”
“Am I in trouble?” She asks, her lips trembling harder now.
I shake my head quickly. All she wants is her mother’s attention, and she’s not wrong to note Sarah’s lacking. “Of course not.”
“And mom? Is she in trouble now?”
I don’t say anything, I just nod slowly. “It’s okay. No one’s in any trouble.”
“How about you get settled in and I get you some hot chocolate to warm yourself up?” I offer, smiling down at
her.
Her eyes light up immediately and she nods giddily.
Detaching myself from her, I tuck her in before heading out of my room and back down the stairs.
The kitchen downstairs is packed with bottles of wine and alcohol and the maids move busily about, moving drinks out.
I bit down on my lip in an unsuccessful attempt to contain my anger. Running a hand through my hair, I call for one of the staff to send a cup of hot chocolate up to Kelly before dialing Josh.
He meets me on the porch in a few minutes. “Alpha?” He asks,

“Send the guests away.” I order coldly. “I don’t want to hear any more of it.”
As I head back up to my room. I ring Kelly’s doctor, but there’s no answer.
“Daddy Kelly smiles over at me, “Do you want a taste?”
I nod, taking the mug and sipping slightly. Nodding to her with a grin. “It’s good.”
After the second call goes unanswered, I pull open my drawer, searching for his business card.
Ringing his office phone, I get an answer on the second ring.

“Dr. Hartley’s secretary speaking. He’s currently out of the office. What can I do for you?” His secretary’s voice comes from the other end.
“It’s Mr Blackwood.” I say in a clipped tone. “I’m calling in regards to Kelly’s last appointment three days ago? It seems her symptoms are not alleviated. I’d like to reschedule another appointment for tomorrow.”
The line goes quiet for a moment. “Uhmm, I’m sorry sir but there’s no records of an appointment for Kelly Blackwood. Not in the last year at least.”
My brows furrow in confusion. “That’s Hartley’s office isn’t it? Kelly has an appointment every week. How could there be no records?” I ask, my tone displeased.
“There’s no information on that available in our records, Sir.” The secretary confirms, “Dr.Hartley hasn’t seen Kelly in a year.”
I hang up. Baffled at the secretary’s words.
A year? Kelly has just one doctor and I’d picked her and Sarah up from the hospital a few times myself.
Dr. Hartley also constantly updates me on her condition after each appointment. How could there be no records?
“Kelly?” I ask, turning to her. “Did you go to the hospital to see Dr.Hartley a few days ago?”
Kelly looks thoughtful for a moment. “We did go to see, Dr.Hartley. Mommy and I. But not at the big hospital…”
“Mommy took us there to wait for you later.”
I freeze. Does that mean every hospital visit in the past year has been a lie? They’d gone for frequent appointments but not in the hospital?
Where has Sarah been taking Kelly? And why is she lying to me?
