The door creaks open a short time later and Kael walks in, a glass of vodka in hand.
I’m sitting on the bed, going through my mailbox and I glance over at him, raising a brow.

“I only had a glass.” He says like he already knows what’s on my mind. “I’m not going to spend our first night together tipsy.”
I scoff beneath my breath. Kael has a way of reading his own meaning into everything, and I haven’t even said a word.
“Did I mention, how beautiful you look tonight, my dear wife?” He adds, winking.
“We’re alone now.” I point out, “You can drop the act.”
Kael chuckles quietly. “For our own sanity, I think we had best get used to the act… for the rest of the week.” He closes the door behind him and walks over to the bed, placing the glass down on the nightstand.
What does that mean? Is he proposing we play a loving couple even behind closed doors?
He doesn’t clarify, and I don’t ask.
He begins undressing till he’s only left in his pants, his gaze fixed on me.
“Cameron and I will accompany Max to a business meeting with a few other Alphas in the morning.” Kael relays to me, “In the meantime, my granddad called. He wants you and Sarah to join Shirley in picking out the cuisine for the summit. It seems the previous arrangement was cancelled last minute.”
I frown, still typing on my laptop. “Convenient.”
It’s just great that I have to be stuck with Sarah for the whole day.
“Do you want to switch?” Kael offers, quirking a brow at me.
I can already tell where he’s going with this and after the encounter with Cameron a moment ago, the last thing I want to do right now is talk about him.
Ignoring Kael, I get off the bed. Taking my laptop with me. “Will you take the couch, or should I?”
Kael frowns. Pulling back the covers, he gets into the bed and I resist the urge to roll my eyes.
“Fine. I’ll take the couch then.” I say, turning to head to the other end of the room but Kael cuts in.
“Get in bed, Laila.” He says firmly, his tone leaving no room for arguments.
I hesitate for a moment, before heading back to the bed. Going around to the other side, I perch by the edge, staring blankly at the wall.

Kael watches me in silence for a moment before he says, “I’ve never taken a woman that didn’t want to be taken, Laila.”
“You can be rest assured I won’t touch you.” He pauses, “Not unless you want me to.”
I ignore his last statement. As for the rest of it, I believe him.
We lived together for three years and he didn’t make a single advance on me. Even when the contract technically says I was to satisfy him sexually while we are married.
Brushing aside my hesitation, I get into the bed, pulling the covers up to my neck.
Kael lies still behind me, and for a long time, we’re both silent. I know he’s not asleep because his breathing hasn’t evened out.
And I can’t sleep either. Not with my pulse racing this fast.
The silence stretches and just as it’s becoming unbearable, I break it.
“What’s your real reason?” I ask.
Kael shuffles slightly on the bed, probably glancing over at me. “My real reason for what? Getting married to you?”
I shake my head slightly. “No, not that.”
“I mean, your real reason for shooting Alpha Marcus.” I clarify.
Kael’s quiet for a moment, and then he scoffs beneath his breath. “I’m guilty of many things.”
“Worse than you’ve seen. Probably worse than you can even imagine…but I don’t lie, Laila.”
That is all the response he gives. I contemplate his words for a long time, until my eyes grow heavy and I drift off to an uneasy sleep.
I wake up the next morning to a cold and empty bed. Sitting up, I glance around the room, my eyes still groggy with sleep.
Kael is nowhere to be seen. His side of the bed is cold to touch, which tells me he’s been gone for a while already.
It’s not even a surprise that Kael doesn’t have the decency to wake me up before he leaves.
Grumbling beneath my breath, I push the covers back, getting off the bed.
While Kael and Cameron would leave for their meeting this morning, I’ll only be heading out with Shirley and Sarah at noon so there’s no need to hurry.
I head into the bathroom first, taking a shower. And once I’m out, I put on casual lounge wear, fetching my

First, I need to check on Liam and afterwards I have a few papers to grade.

The door opens just as I’m about to ring Marie, and Kael walks in. He’s fully dressed in a sleek black suit and custom made shoes.
He’s holding his phone up as he walks in, a grin on his lips. “So, are you saying Daddy looks smart this morning?”
Liam’s giddy voice sounds from Kael’s speaker. “Nooooo….” He denies, giggling hysterically.
“No?” Kael asks as he walks over to me, “I’m pretty sure that’s what I heard.”
Liam’s giggling again, and a smile finds its way to my lips. Kael passes his phone to me and I take it, my heart warming at the sight of my son.
Liam’s still in his pajamas, sitting in a high chair and from the smears of water colour on his cheeks, I can’t tell he’s been up to no good already.
“Mommy!” He calls excitedly, waving his hands so quickly, he nearly knocks Marie’s phone down.
“Hi baby.” I respond with an equally frantic wave, my smile stretching to a grin. “You look like you’re having fun.”
Liam nods in agreement. “The old man fun.” He says, smiling brightly.
“Is he now?” I tease, “How are you this morning? Missing mommy yet?”
Liam shakes his head in denial and I fake gasp. “My heart can’t take it.”
Liam giggles again, his eyes glinting mischievously. “Miss miss mommy…” He finally admits.
His bottom lip trembles and my heart aches at the sight.
“Just one night more baby. Can you be a good boy for me?” I ask him,
Liam nods. I hear Grandfather Blackwood call for him somewhere in the background and I nod. “Go on. I’ll call a little bit later.”
The call ends and I hand Kael’s phone back to him. “When did you call home?”
Kael stuffs his phone into his pocket. “After my shower. About a half hour ago. Liam had a lot of gossip to tell about the old man.”
My lips twitch despite myself. “Did you have my son spy on your
Kael shrugs casually, like he has no idea what I’m talking about.
My eyes narrow and he finally says,
Grandfather?”

“I didn’t ask him to spy, Laila. Just to let me know if my name comes up.”
“That’s spying, Kael.” 1 point out.
“Is it?” He asks, “I didn’t realize.”
I shake my head slightly. “The meeting?”
He glances down at his wristwatch and then nods. “I should go.”

He hesitates for a moment, a complicated look in his eyes. Then he turns and heads back out and as the door closes, the strangeness of our exchange occurs to me.
Did Kael and I just have…a morning like a normal couple?
I’m not sure if it’s something about this lake house, but Kael’s been different since we stepped through the doors.
And I’m not sure how to feel about it.
