Kael pulls up at the lake house. Getting out of the car, he comes around to my end, picking me up into his arms like I weigh less than a piece of paper.
His hold around me is firm, but he’s careful to avoid my injured arm.
“I can walk…” I begin to protest, anger still surging through my veins.
He’d said whatever he wanted and then kissed me to shut me up. And then he pulled back into the road without another word.
And now, he’s back to playing the doting husband. Like he didn’t just crush me beneath him a few moments
ago.
“Let go!…” I hiss lowly,
Kael ignores me, slamming the door shut.
“Let me down, Kael.” I insist firmly, pushing on his chest but his hold on me only tightens.
He heads into the lake house where Shirley and Max are waiting out on the porch. Sarah is there as well. At the sight of them, I push away the anger burning through me and force a smile on my lips,
“Laila!” Shirley sees us first and hurries over, her eyes wide and worried,
I can see the genuine relief shining in them. She must be feeling guilty since she’s the one who took us out to the cuisine tasting.
But she’s not the one who should be feeling any guilt.
Sarah follows behind quickly, a false look of dismay on her face as she reaches us. “Oh my, Laila! Are you alright?!”
“Does she look alright?” Kael responds before I can, his tone sharp and chilly.
Sarah’s expression stiffens momentarily, but she’s quick to regain her composure. Her eyes then begin to water, and her lips tremble.
I resist the urge to roll my eyes. Of course she’s about to throw a pity party, it’s Sarah the drama queen after
all.
“About this…” She says in a near whimper, “When Laila mentioned Kelly, I just lost my cool…”
“I didn’t… I didn’t mean to…”
I blink in astonishment. I mentioned Kelly? What kind of story has Sarah spun to get herself out of trouble?

Chapter 52
:
Was that why Cameron acted the way he did when I brought up the Kelly incident?

He was almost defensive, shutting me down by saying he didn’t want to bring it up. But it’s all because he just couldn’t bring himself to confront it.
Sarah had come at me completely unprovoked. But then again, there is no evidence of what happened, or witnesses. We were too far away from the other Lunas for anyone to have seen. And most of the staff were on the ground floor.
All that’s left is her word against mine. And while I was unconscious, Sarah’s already gotten the first word in.
Using Kelly? That’s always been Sarah’s trump card.
Kelly’s birth to secure Cameron’s love. Kelly’s ailing health to keep him by her side and away from home. The blood transfusion to finally get rid of me.
First the mate bond and then Kelly. That about sums up Sarah’s plots.
But she always wins. Because Kelly holds a significant influence as the first grandchild.
The moment Kelly’s dragged into the mix, the prejudice everyone still holds against me for the poisoning incident creeps up.
After all, poisoning a child is relatively worse than slapping a sister–in–law.
I can see the wariness hidden behind Shirley’s smile. And the unspoken distant regard from Max.
They try not to show it but the change in the way they regard me is pretty obvious.
It’s funny how in the space of a few hours, I’m once again the villain. And I’m the one who got hurt.
Whatever Laila’s told them, I’m sure it’s painted her as the victim and me as the perpetrator. For the second time.
At this point, nothing I say will matter anymore. A sinking feeling twists my stomach but I suppress it.
A few years ago, all I wanted was the approval of everyone Cameron respects. But I’m not the same person I was then. Their approval doesn’t matter to me at all.
Sarah seems to be waiting for me to say something. Her eyes subtly flicker over to me. There’s a silent warning in her cold gaze.
I can practically hear the words she doesn’t say. ‘You can try to deny it, but no one is going to believe you anyways!
And as much as I hate it, she’s right.
I don’t get to dwell on it before Kael’s breaks the silence.
“Listen
you little lying shit, I don’t give two shits what your reasoning is,” He snapped. “Get the fuck out of my face or you’ll find yourself with three times as much fractures as my wife,”

Sarah’s jaws drop open in shock. I’m certain it’s the first time anyone’s ever spoken to her like this since she became the Lama of Blackwood Pack.
1 look up at Kael in surprise, but he’s not even looking at me. His glare is fixed on Sarah, harsh enough that she’s visibly trembling.
And Cameron isn’t here for her to hide behind.
Despite my anger at Kael, I can’t help a sense of satisfaction to see just how intimidated Sarah is by him.
Kael’s anger is practically pouring off of him in waves. I can feel it in how his hold around me tightens, and his chest rises and falls faster.
I’m sure everyone can see it too. And it’s obvious he means every word he’s just said.
“Kael, calm yourself.” Alpha Max intervenes, placing a hand on Kael’s shoulder.
Kael shrugs off the hand. “Don’t tell me what to do.” He snarls, glaring at Max.
His attention returns to Sarah, still glowering. “You should be grateful I’m letting you live this time. But lay a hand on my wife again…” His voice drops, to an almost deathly hiss.
“And I’ll make sure it’s the last thing you ever do. And if you think anyone can protect you from me…” He leaves his words hanging, but it hits heavier than any threat ever could.
I cling to Kael’s neck as he storms past a gaping Sarah, Shirley and Max, and just as we get to the door, Cameron’s standing right there.
His lips move like he’s going to say something and Kael pauses, his eyes narrowing.
But Cameron says nothing, stepping aside.
Kael scoffs beneath his breath. “I thought as much.”
