He stops right by the foot of the bed, his pants drop from his waist and he shrugs them off, now standing in just his boxer briefs.
I gulp audibly. What did he say again?
Oh right. Blackwood Pack.
“I know it’s mostly in name, but I’ve been your legal adviser for what?” I murmur, “Three years? I know what you have going on for you Kael.”
He quirks a brow, smirking slightly. In that manner that says he knows something I don’t. “The legal side of it,
at least.”
I nod in agreement. Blake keeps me well informed about the surface level of Mystic Inc. At mid level, there’s the nightclubs and fight dens. But that’s not all.
Kael’s influence is much deeper and way more complicated than most people realize. I’m only involved in the surface level, but I know as far as the mid level. Beyond that, I have absolutely no idea what he does.
I only know it involves guns, the mafia and a whole lot of illegal activities. He keeps his businesses in the underground under wraps, and I have absolutely no interest in knowing either.
The more I know, the more deeply intertwined with him I become. And heaven knows I’m intertwined enough.
Any more than this and I…
I quickly shake off the thought before it can take root.
“So I know…” I trail off for a moment as Kael’s hand moves to my hair, casually playing with the strands. “That you don’t need Blackwood Corporation.”
Clearing my throat lightly, I inch away from him and he lets go of my hair, chuckling lowly.
“Or the pack.” I finish.
He shrugs again. The action makes his muscles flex, looking even more appealing. And gods, the man is fit!
Focus, Laila!
“I don’t.” He agrees, “But Cameron does.”
My brows furrow slightly. Kael…He doesn’t actually want to be the Alpha of the pack. He’s too free spirited to be caged in by pack rules and the demands of the title.
He simply wants to take away what Cameron cherishes the most.

But I can’t help but wonder, just how far does he plan to go? How much will he take before he’s satisfied?
Before I can think to say anything else, a muted sob echoes through the lake house. It sounds distant, but there’s only three couples in this house and Shirley wouldn’t cry…
The voice is unmistakably Sarah’s. I might not like her, but I’d recognize that it anywhere.
My brows furrow slightly and I pass a look to Kael, but his expression remains completely indifferent.
Instead he retreats from the bed, going over to pour himself a glass of vodka from the nightstand.
The sobbing comes again. This time it’s louder and accompanied by heavy footfalls.
“Cam… I swear it’s not what you think! Cam! Come back!”
Cameron and Sarah are having a fight? Here in the lake house? Cameron was protective of her just earlier. What in the world is going on out there?
My eyes dart to the door and back to Kael. Kael lifts the glass to his lips, his expression suspiciously calm.
“Kael…” I begin warily, “What did you do?”
He shrugs in that uninterested way of his, still slowly sipping on his vodka. He doesn’t speak, but he doesn’t attempt to deny being involved either.
And knowing Kael, he’s definitely involved.
My eyes narrow slightly, “Kael…”
There’s no use trying to get through to him and I already know that so I quickly reach for my phone on the nightstand by my bed.
“Put it down, Laila.” Kael grunts beneath his breath, “I want your eyes on me.”
I glance over at him for a brief moment. He’s always been fond of misleading choices of words.
But I know deep down what Kael really thinks of me.
I don’t comply with his request. Scrolling through my notifications, my eyes widen to see that the most recent news headlines reads,
‘At precisely 9pm this evening, the raging lightning storm in Thorneville has left all three branches of the luxury VIP Mall, Hazel, razed to the ground in a massive fire breakout.’
“The police and other relevant authorities have begun making investigations into the incident and unlikely revelations have come forward.
“The Hazel Mall which was believed affiliated to the Blue water corporation is now rumored to in fact belong to the Blackwood Corporation. The previously hidden identity of the largest shareholder was specifically

traced back to Luna Sarah Blackwood, wife of the current Alpha, Cameron Blackwood of the Blackwood Pack.
Hazel Mall?
Kael’s words from earlier in the hospital ward rings through my mind.
‘She’ll have just one of those left by morning.‘ he’d said,
I know this can’t be a coincidence. Kael always means his words. I had thought he decided to overlook the incident… How wrong I was.
“Kael, how could you?” I hiss lowly. “How could you even think to…” I trail off, unsure of what to say.
Because I know, that this… burning a chain of malls to the ground is Kael’s own definition of mercy.
“Popular opinion wonders exactly why Luna Sarah Blackwood would conceal ownership of the Hazel Mall under the guise of a rival company. Is this an independent act? Or is Alpha Blackwood involved?”
“And is it truly a coincidence that all three branches of the same mall were the only structures irrecoverably burnt by the lightning storm?” The news report read.
“So far, there have been no reports of foul play. All fingers remain crossed, awaiting the release of a statement by the Blackwood Corporation.”
Before I can read any further, Kael snatches the phone from my grip, tossing it aside. His fingers move to my chin, tilting my head up to meet his piercing gaze.
The look in his eyes startles me. Kael’s pupils are dilated, and I don’t have to hear his next words to know what had just happened,
“What did I say about being stubborn, Laila?”
