The car finally stops outside the lake house, stirring me out of my thoughts. I reach for my phone, glancing down at it.
My reflection stares back at me, the hives lining my neck are now prominent. Angry red spots, a stark contrast against my skin.
The itch begun a while ago but I resist the urge to scratch at it.
It’s not the first time. But the bitter feeling of humiliation surges through my veins, raw and visceral.
I should have been more careful. I’ve always been, but today, I let myself get distracted.
Laila… she muddles my thoughts. Being with her paints the world around me in a better picture than I see it myself.
She makes everything look kinder… lighter. But the world isn’t a bed of roses.
If Alpha Tyler has done this on purpose or not, I’m not sure yet. But I’ll make certain he pays for it.
My hands clench tightly at my sides.
I left in a hurry, in the midst of the chaos brought by the storm as the authorities gathered to rescue others stuck around the forest.
It was my only chance to leave before the Alphas could notice it. But I can’t tell if anyone saw or not.
I’m not even sure if I was photographed by the media.
I catch myself just as I reach up to scratch at my neck. The discomfort is builds steadily.
My screen lights up again. Sarah’s left me two dozen calls already.
My jaws tick in annoyance. What the hell does she want?!
I know she’s been up to no good, but I couldn’t have expected she’d actually tamper with Blackwood Businesses under the cover of the Hazel Mall.
Now, Granddad wants her gone. And the truth is, I do too.
I’m not sure when it happened exactly, but whatever it is we had three years ago is long gone.
I ignore her call, ringing Josh instead.
“Alpha.”
“Josh, vet every news article about the storm.” I say, my tone tight. “Make sure it’s clean.”

The Blackwoods have enough media atention already. We don’t need a picture of me plastered across the front pages with speculations of my allergy.

I know how much my Granddad values a stable family And Sarah’s lost the ability to meet his expectations.
But Laila has always impressed the old man, without even trying to. Three years ago…, and even NOW:

“And where is she?” He asks, his brow furrowed.
My hands clench tighter. “With Kael.”
:
Granddad nods once. “Good. Kael will take care of his wife. As he should.”
“You…” His eyes narrow in distaste. “You should be more attentive to yours.”

It’s a simple statement, but I know it’s not as simple as it sounds. Grandad waves a hand in dismissal.
I turn to leave but pause,
“The title of Luna should be returned to Laila.” I say, my tone decided.
The old man’s eyes move back to me, his brows quirked.
“Everything should return back to its rightful place.” I continue,
His eyes shine with interest and he leans back on his chair.
“You are willing to forfeit the title of Alpha to Kael?” He asks, his lips pursed into a thin line.
I shake my head firmly. “No.”
“But I’ll take Laila back. She was mine to start with.”
He chuckles at my words, amusement shining in his eyes.
“And do you think Kael will sit aside and watch that happen? Watch you take away his wife?”
Kael…a few years ago, the old man could barely tolerate the mention of his name. But since he returned with the backing of Mystic Inc, he’s become protective of Kael like he wasn’t the one who banished him.
I grit my teeth. “I’m not asking for permission. I’m just making my intentions clear.”
“I hope you won’t interfere with my business this time.”
Granddad shakes his head slowly, but he doesn’t say anything more.
I don’t wait for an answer either. I turn and head out of the study. Making for the stairs.
But I stop halfway when a small blur comes running in my direction.
It’s Liam. Laila’s son. He’s running down the hallway in my direction and at his pace, I can see the fall happening already.
I pause, uncertain.
“Liam!” Marie calls.
I hesitate for a moment, before crouching down, catching the little bundle of excitement before he can trip

“Owwie!” He cries out, his eyes wide and teary.
