Kael still avoids my eyes. His fists are tightly clenched on his thighs, knuckles white and he keeps glancing down at his watch, like he can’t wait to get away from me.

The feeling is mutual.

I should be the one in a mood after what happened at the gala, but he’s gone from ignoring me to fuming

Maybe it’s something I’ve done, or something Cameron might have said. But it’s probably just Kael being Kael

Liam shuffles in my lap, now awake and I smile slightly, the bitter thoughts disappearing in the same instant.

The night air is chilly. I pull Kael’s jacket tighter around Liam’s small frame. It covers him up completely but Liam doesn’t mind, he’s been giddy since Kael draped it around him once we left the gala.

I still doubt if his attentiveness to Liam is genuine or maybe it’s just another of Kael’s games.

And my greatest fear is the fact that I can’t tell. I just can’t see through Kael.

I shake off the thought. Thinking about it won’t change anything. For now and the foreseeable, I’m Kael’s willing pawn.

The car pulls up at Kael’s newly acquired mansion. He had moved in here a while ago when he began making plans to move us and Mystic Inc down to Thorneville.

It’s not a large estate like the Blackwoods are known for. It’s nothing like our home back in Ridgeway either.

Even so, the moderate size does nothing to dampen the cold and soulless atmosphere, characteristic of a Blackwood home… it’s not so different from Cameron’s estate after all.

The car pulls to a stop and Marie, Kael’s housekeeper is already waiting by the porch.

“Stay” Kael says to me, getting down from the car.

I bite down the protest on my tongue, the look in his eyes makes it clear there’s no room for arguments.

He comes around to my end and opens the door, reaching for Liam. “Marie will take you in first. We’ll join you soon, okay?”

Liam nods sleepily and Kael picks him up, walking over to Marie.

I watch in silence as he whispers some instructions to her before he returns to the car, getting back in.

Blake gets off just as he does, leaving just Kael and I in the car.

“Laila…” Kael breaks the silence, his tone a low growl, “Do you know what you did wrong today?”

My brows furrow into a frown. Replaying the past few hours in my head, I’d done everything exactly as Kael

asked me to.

“You hesitated.” He deadpans. Whirling around to face me.

He leans forward suddenly, his face is now a breath away from mine. I jump but he’s faster, steadying me with a hand around my waist.

His breath fans the side of my face. It’s warm against my skin, and smells of mint and champagne.

“Tell me, now that you’ve seen him, are you having second thoughts?” His eyes bore into mine, gaze piercing like he can see into my soul.

See right into the truths I hide. And I wouldn’t be surprised if he could. Kael is a man straight out of a nightmare.

“I gave you my word, Kael.” I breathe out, my fists clenched to still the tremors, “You can choose to trust me or not. But we’re in this together.”

“Are we?” Kael’s eyes search mine. Whatever he finds in them reassures him enough because he visibly relaxes.

“We will have none of that going forward.” He clarifies. “You knew what this was. What this was going to be and you signed my contract either way.”

“Now I expect you to keep your end of the bargain… and do it splendidly well.” Kael warns, his eyes dark and devoid of any emotion. “If I find out you still feel something for him, I will cut it out of you myself. Do not test me, Laila.”

It’s not a warning, Kael doesn’t give warnings… it’s a promise. And I know better than to doubt him.

He finally leans back, “You should go…or I might give in to the temptation to teach you what happens when you let me see you crying over another man.”

I get down quickly. The night air is chilly and I wrap my arms around myself, hurrying into the warmth of

Kael’s home… our home.

I’d gotten a brief tour of the house earlier in the day so it doesn’t take too long to make my way to Liam’s bedroom.

The scent of Liam’s favourite bath bomb leads me to the bathroom. I find him playing with bubbles as Marie sets the temperature for his bath.

“Mommy?” His eyes light up and my heart warms.

“Yes baby, Mommy’s here.” I walk over, picking him up before turning to Marie.

“He’s just about to take his bath.” She explains dutifully.

“Thank you, Marie.” I say, “I’ll do it.”

“Thank you, Mawie.” Liam echoes,

Marie nods, smiling fondly at Liam before taking her leave.

“That’s my good boy.” I coo softly, nuzzling a grinning Liam before placing him down in the bath. “Now, we have to be quick. It’s way past your bed time and tomorrow’s your first day in kindergarten. We don’t want to be late, do we?”

“No.” He replies, rubbing his eyes. “Daddy take me? I want Daddy.”

I hum, bathing him in silence. Tonight, I saw a side of Kael I haven’t in a long while. I don’t know what tomorrow holds for he and I.

“Well, let’s ask him tomorrow then.” I offer.

Liam nods slowly. “Mommy and Daddy fight?”

I hesitate, but only for a moment before smiling fondly. “You’ll catch a cold if you play around in the water any longer. And you get all cranky when you fall sick.”

Liam giggles, “Not true! Mommy’s cranky one!”

Laughing quietly, I quickly dry him off. I change him into his pajamas and scoop him up again.

“Let’s get you to bed, baby.”
