The heat of their gazes burns into the side of my face. I didn’t want this dragged out into the open, not like this, not with all their eyes on me.

But Sarah doesn’t deny it. She can’t at this point.

Instead, she snaps, You’ve always hated me, Kael. You twist everything I do into something vile.

Because it is vile. And so are you.”

Her lips fall open in disbelief, and then close. Her eyes shift to Cameron. Say something, she whispers to him, voice breaking. You don’t believe them, do you?

Cameron’s knife clinks against the plate as he sets it down. He leans back in his chair, his gaze is cold and unreadable. Don’t make a scene.” His warns in a chilling tone.

It’s cold enough that it sends a chill down my spine too.

As for Sarah, her lips tremble and she’s one step away from bursting into tears again.

I believe Kael knows the consequences of making groundless accusations.

Enough,Grandfather snaps, his cane slamming once against the floor. The sound cuts sharply through the hall. Sarah, you’ve disgraced this family enough. I don’t want to hear you speak unless you’ve resolved the situation with Hazel mall.

Cameron shifts beside her, her hand reaches for his but he pulls away without even looking. His face remains a blank, unreadable mask.

Now that she’s been outed to Grandfather, Cameron has no intentions of speaking up for her. I almost feel

bad for Sarah.

Grandfather’s expression hardens. Enough excuses. The evidence stands.”

Sarah’s tears spill, her tone trembling. I swear it. You have to believe me

But Cameron doesn’t look at her. His gaze is fixed on me again,

And I wish he didn’t.

The more he stares, the heavier Kael’s hand on my thigh grows.

Because his eyes clearly aren’t those of my husband’s brother, or even my son’s uncle.

He looks at me like a claim he’s never let go off. Like someone that still belongs to him.

It’s obvious enough, everyone can sense it. Even Sarah.

Chapter 74

She glares daggers into the side of my head whilst sobbing quietly

Once again. I’m the centre of all the attention. The good, bad and the ugly.

Mostly bad and ugly. There’s no one sitting here with the right motives.

Heat crawls underneath my skin. I exhale slowly, reaching for my glass of water.

Kael’s hand moves first, sliding the glass closer to me before I can even touch it.

His fingers linger on the rim, a seemingly casual touch, but it’s deliberate.

Possessive. An expression of ownership.

My breath catches. My fists tightly clenched.

A pawnI know I’ve always been one, but I’m beginning to feel like it.

Cameron’s jaw flexes visibly. His fork clatters against the plate.

The tension returns sharply.

And then Grandfather breaks it with a sharp rap of his cane. Enough. We face the summit in two days. Keep your personal quarrels out of my sight.”

The rest of breakfast passes in silence. The only sound was that of the clink of cutleries, cups being refilled and maybe the unsteady beats of my heart as the weight of everything that has been said and was left unsaid presses down on my chest.

My appetite is gone. I didn’t even have one to start with.

I’m sure it’s the same for everyone else. Except maybe Kael who goes on eating like nothing happened.

Like his entire family didn’t just go for each other’s throats. Like he didn’t ruin Cameron’s marriage and in so doing, push Cameron further down the path he has long wanted.

Like he’s not lying in wait for the moment Cameron finally makes his move on me so he can finally use the pawn he’s been raising for three years. Me.

But this is just another day in the Blackwood family.

No one leaves the table until Grandfather’s plates are finally cleared. He dismisses us with a wave of his hand, muttering something about the summit as he fetches his cane, rising to his feet whilst taking a call.

I push my chair back, careful not to scrape it too loudly against the floor, and stand up.

Kael’s hand brush against my lower back as I pass him. He’s made a habit of this little show of possession and unspoken claims here or there.

But I can’t help but wonder if it’s still for Cameron’s benefit or something else.

Chapter 73

1 hear him get up behind me and it doesn’t take long for him to catch up, he follows a few paces behind as we go up the stairs and out of sight of the dining hall.

In the hallway, he catches my wrist from behind, tugging me into a dark corner.

In a flash, he’s caging me against the wall. His chest pressed up against mine as he gazes down at me. His eyes burn into mine, and even from this close, with his face barely a few inches from mine and his warm breaths fanning my face, I still can’t read him.

His eyes reveal a lot, yet nothing at the same time.

You see how quickly Cameron’s turning on her,he murmurs, his thumb brushing my pulse. Just like he did to you all those years ago

My stomach twists. My chest tight at the memory.

That’s who he is, Laila. And even nowHe trails off, like he’s giving me a moment to digest his words. That’s how fast he’ll turn on you, too.”

I swallow, hard. My throat is dry. You wanted to destroy her. And you did. That’s all it is.I reply blankly.

Kael smirks lightly. This was only the first step.

My heart drops. Because I see it in Kael’s eyes at this momentthe hatethe bloodthirst, all directed at Cameron.

Whatever lines blurred between us last night, whatever fire had lit between us, whatever feelings we shared, none of it will be nearly enough to hold him back.

Kael hasn’t forgotten the reason for all of this.

And so, neither can I.
