Chapter 82

Chapter 82

-Laila

An hour before the gala, 1 step out of the shower to find Kael perched on the bed.

He’s partly dressed in his suit pants and a crisp white shirt buttoned up halfway. His tie is neatly folded beside him and he’s slowly strapping on a vintage leather wrist watch.

Meanwhile, I’m still in my bathrobe. With the traces of himthe smell of him, lingering on my skin.

My dress is laid out on the bed a short distance away from him and judging from how he’s staring at it, he seems to have found some interest in it, like he wasn’t the one who picked it out.

That’s before he notices my presence.

His eyes find mine immediately. For a moment, he doesn’t say anything. He just stares, like he’s trying to read me. Like I’m a puzzle he can’t quite figure out. Like he didn’t already explore every inch of me barely a few hours earlier.

My stomach clenches in response. His eye contact is always so piercing, like he can see through methrough anything. It stirs a warmth in me.

I can’t decide if it’s the aftereffect of his love making, or something else. I don’t get to dwell on it.

In the next moment, Kael’s expression changes into something unreadable, and he averts his gaze.

Somehow, I’ve become better at reading Kael’s body language. Even when his eyes don’t give anything away.

It dawns on me almost instantly that something is off.

A sense of apprehension curls in my stomach even before he speaks.

He finally lifts his eyes to mine again. This time, his gaze is sharp, almost glinting, as though he’s been waiting all day for this.

Cameron’s position in the company,he says flatly, sliding a folder toward me. You’ll be taking it.

I glance down at the folder, but I don’t reach for it. What?

I’m not sure I hear him correctly.

Before the end of the night, at the summit. Cameron will forfeit Blackwood Co.

In Granddad’s presence and the presence of all the Alphas.

I blink, unease churning beneath my skin. To me? Kael, Cameron won’t just hand over the company. Least of

all to me. He’s too

Kael smirks. But his eyes are cold and humorless. He will.

I narrow my eyes in suspicion. Why? Why me?

He leans back slightly, his gaze still fixed on me. Because he owes you something. From the lake house six years ago.”

The air leaves my lungs in a rush. He knows. Kael knows Cameron and I were together here six years ago.

My stomach twists, dread curling within me. Kael

Don’t play dumb,He murmurs, his voice dropping to a low growl. That night, his first night with you. Do you think I don’t know what really happened? That he couldn’t keep his wolf in check?

My throat tightens. Terror crawls down my spine. For a moment, I can’t breathe.

That night has haunted me for years. It’s a memory I buried so deep even Cameron and I never spoke of it.

Our arranged marriage, the distance between us, the careful coldness. It all started then, that first night in the lake house when Cameron lost himself.

A full moon night.

For us shifters, it’s a time we have to be watchful. Because our control over our wolf side thins, the beast rises. demanding release, satiating its most primal urges.

Cameron had lost control of his lust. And I’d let him claim me. Not out of lovewe barely knew each other.

Not out of choice either, the primal haze didn’t afford him the decency to ask. Out of necessity.

Falling to the control of the moon is a sign of weakness amongst shifters. For an Alphait is the greatest

shame.

Cameron made me swear never to say a word about it. But now Kael knows.

How?My voice comes out raw, fractured. How did you find out?

Kael doesn’t answer. He doesn’t need to.

I retreat a few steps back, bile rising in my throat. That wasKael, it was private. It’s not leverage, it’s

Cameron won’t just lose his title if it gets out. It’ll destroy his image completely. He’ll be shunned by shifters even less than the Alpha rank.

It’s exactly that,” he snaps, cutting me off, his eyes flashing with rage. An Alpha who can’t control his wolf is weak. Shamed. Imagine what happens when the Summit hears he broke his new bride out of desperation, not mutual desire. Imagine the whispers, the mockery.

StopI hiss, my hands trembling.

But Kael rises, stalking towards me. His presence is suffocating. Dark and cruel. He pins me with his gaze until my knees threaten to buckle.

He dared. Karl seethes, his voice is low but vicious, to question Liam’s blood. To order a test. He thought he could take my son from me So I’ll take something from him. His pride. His company. His place in front of the packs And I’ll do it with you.”

My hands tremble.

Kael’s grip on my chin is ironclad. Not bruising, but unyielding. His eyes bore into mine, full of dark intent.

You were mine the moment you said yes,he murmurs, low and dangerous, The only one you need to be worried aboutthe only one that deserves your concern or your empathy, is me. Don’t forget that.

My pulse thuds against my throat. His thumb grazes my bottom lip, and I hate the way my body betrays me, reacting even through the fury squeezed tight in my chest.

This isn’t about me,I whisper, my voice hoarse. It’s about punishing Cameron in the cruelest way possible. And you’re using me to do it.

Kael smirks, but there’s no humor in it. Only that smug satisfaction he wears when he knows he’s already won. I don’t use pawns, Laila. I use weapons. And right now, you’re the sharpest one I’ve got.

My stomach knots. The folder lies beside us on the bed, a silent witness to everything he’s asking of me.

You’ll be there,he continues, his tone matteroffact, like this is already set in stone. You’ll smile. You’ll stand close enough for him to choke on the memory of that night. And when I force him to give it up, you won’t flinch.

I bite back the bile rising in my throat.

That night. The one I buried, the one Cameron buried. And now Kael has dug it up, turned it into a weapon to swing at Cameron’s throat.

But this won’t just affect Cameron. This isn’t just his privacy. It’s mine too!

Do you hate me so much? The words slip out before I can stop them.

His expression shifts, briefly. To something almost softbut it’s gone before I can name it. He leans in close enough that I can smell the faint traces of tobacco on his skin.

No, his response is simple. I hate him.”
