The silence is punctuated by the clicking sounds of Laila’s heels as she swiftly heads for the exit

The quiet whispers grow louder and dozens of eyes trail her.

She doesn’t stop. She doesn’t turn back once.

Once she’s out the door, all the attention is back on me.

They’re probably wondering how much of what I have just said is real and will actually take effect by

tomorrow.

My eyes meet Kael’s. He answers my gaze with a smirk and the unspoken reminder of the words he’d whispered to my hearing.

If Laila Blackwood isn’t CEO of Blackwood Corporation by morning, everyone will know about the full moon night.

I don’t just have to pass on my title, I have to make sure everyone accepts the change.

My hands clench tightly.

I can’t believe Laila told Kael about it. She knew how important that information was…

She knew it could ruin me! She knew Kael would not hesitate to make me into the laughing stock of all the Alphas!

My eyes trail Kael as he exits the hall, likely to catch up to Laila, And I’m left with the choice to either submit to Kael’s demand, or risk what tomorrow brings.

My fists clench tighter. “This will be finalized at a press conference in a few days.” I say, my voice carries through the hall, calm and firm.

“Till then, any rumors will be severely punished. That will be all. Enjoy the party.”

I make for the door but stop by Granddad’s side. His eyes are narrowed in stern displeasure.

“Whatever this is about, fix it.” He warns in that terrifyingly cold manner that still sends a chill down my spine. “Don’t make me step in and teach you how to be Alpha.”

His words are not just a warning. It’s a threat.

Granddad is hale and hearty and still has the support and loyalty of many. He’s by all means a strong contender for the title of Alpha. If he chooses to come out of retirement… neither 1, nor Kael stands a chance. against him.

I purse my lips, displeasure churns within me at the veiled threat.

My strides are stiff but deliberate as I exit the hall, glancing around.

Laila… I have to find her.

And if truly…if by any chance, Liam is mine…

“Cam…” Sarah’s voice cuts through the haze of my thoughts.

Pausing in my tracks, I turn, to find her walking over to me. She’s dressed in a low cut dinner dress, perfectly suited to the event.

Only that, she wasn’t invited.

What the hell is she doing here?

A tinge of frustration curls within me but I suppress it.

“What are you doing here, Sarah?” I hiss lowly, “Didn’t Grandad already make it clear you aren’t allowed to attend any public events till you sort out whatever ties you have with Bluewater Pack?”

“I have no dealings with them! She cries out, tears spilling out her already swollen eyes. How many times do I have to say it for you to believe me? Why would I ever have dealings with a rival pack?”

The Bluewater Pack is setting me up. They’re doing this to come between us and ruin the pack. If the Alpha and Luna of Blackwood are not united, the pack is vulnerable. Don’t you see that?!” She reasons, her tone desperate. “All I care about is you, Cam. Our family…our bond…”

1 exhale sharply, running a hand through my hair. “I’m looking into it, alright? But you’re already in Granddad’s bad books. Till this is sorted out, the only way you can help me is by lying low.”

I’ll take care of Bluewater. But you need to stop defying my Grandad’s wishes.” My tone is calmer, “You know very well how much influence he still holds over the pack.”

“Is that how you explain this?” Sarah asks, lifting an envelope to my sight.

I frown in confusion until my eyes find the logo of the lab where I ordered Liam’s DNA test.

The test results… How did Sarah even get her hands on them?

My brows furrow slightly, eyes narrowing dangerously.

“Sarah…” I trail off, anger surging through my veins. “Why do you have that?”

“Why?” She scoffs, her eyes teary but furious. “Why do I know what you’re up to, you mean? Isn’t this why you all wanted me to return to Thorneville? So you have the time to do unreasonable things like this…?!” Her voice is fractured.

I glance around us quickly. We’re alone, for now.

There’s no one else here at the moment but I’m not sure when any one of the Alphas or Lunas from the summit might walk by.

I can’t risk them overhearing our conversation, only to use it against the Blackwood Pack later.

“I asked you to go back to Thorneville for your own good, Sarah.” I clarify in a tight tone. “And for Kelly.”

“As for anything else I do, I don’t owe you any explanation. On the contrary, it’s you who should explain why and for how long you’ve been trailing me.” My tone is as cold as ice.
