Andrew kept his voice steady. "There’s nothing to explain. I don’t owe you anything."
Isabella let out a shaky laugh. "Yeah, of course. You never have to explain yourself to me. You never even see me, no matter how hard I try."
Andrew paused for a second before speaking again. "I get what you’re worried about. I promised I’d help you hide your identity, and I won’t say a word to Emily. But if she decides to dig into things, I’m not going to stop her. As for what you just asked, my answer is no. This is something you have to handle on your own."
Anger crashed through Isabella, burning in her chest and racing through her head. She yelled into the phone, her voice trembling. "If you never liked me, then why were you always so good to me? Why did you act like you cared? You made me believe you felt the same way. Were you just messing with me? This is all your fault, Andrew. If you didn’t have feelings for me, you should’ve stayed away. You kept giving me hope, making it impossible to move on. I’ve wasted all these years on you because of that."
On the other end, Andrew pinched the bridge of his nose and asked the driver to pull over. He stepped out of the car, letting Isabella’s voice fill the quiet space. She was so loud, he didn’t even need to put her on speaker.
He stayed silent, letting her finish. "How can you just take my heart and then leave me like this?" she cried. "How could you do this to me?"
Benjamin stood nearby, his expression darkening as he listened. People passing by were starting to stare, curious about the commotion.
He knew there was no reasoning with Isabella while she was this upset, and there was no way he could just grab her phone. Instead, he scooped her up in his arms, pushed open the door to a nearby room, and carried her inside.
The sudden move shocked Isabella, and she struggled, her feet barely brushing the floor. Benjamin set her down as soon as they were in the room.
He pulled out a pack of cigarettes, lit one, and sank onto the sofa. He looked at her through narrowed eyes. "Go ahead. Say everything you need to tonight."
