My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 1057

Emily’s voice was cool, almost indifferent, and both of them knew exactly what she meant.

Andrew looked at her for a long moment, then reached into the bag and pulled out a velvet box. He opened it, revealing a diamond so big and bright it actually made the driver squint in the rearview mirror. The driver watched as Mr. Lane held the ring out to Ms. Blair, his eyes going wide with surprise.

Was Mr. Lane really about to propose here, in the back seat, while the driver was sitting right there? He held his breath, waiting for something dramatic, but things went in a completely different direction.

Mr. Lane’s voice was low and a little rough, probably from that fever he’d had. It sounded softer than usual. “It’s just a ring. What’s so wrong about it? You don’t like the style?”

Emily frowned, silent.

Andrew barely paused. He smiled, almost like he was just talking to himself. “I’ll have the designer reach out to you. You can tell him exactly what you want. Any style, any detail.”

Emily stayed calm. “Mr. Lane, you know what I really mean.”

He kept going, acting as if he hadn’t even heard her. “Or maybe you want a pink diamond. Or green. Tell the designer. He’ll make it happen.”

The driver couldn’t help but listen in, his heart beating a little faster as he waited for Emily’s answer.

She turned to Andrew and said, in that same steady, clear voice, “This doesn’t mean anything.”

Andrew’s eyes froze, his fingers pressing the velvet box so tightly his knuckles went white. “Then let’s make it mean something.”

Emily looked away. “It’s not about the ring. It’s about who’s giving it. If Tristan Davis gave me this ring, I’d be happy, no matter what it looked like. But if it’s not from the right person, I don’t care how beautiful it is. I don’t want it. I won’t accept it.”

The driver actually felt sorry for Andrew after hearing that. He knew who Tristan Davis was, and honestly, Emily had a point. Tristan was her real boyfriend. Andrew was just... something on the side.

He tried to sneak a glance at Andrew in the mirror. Andrew didn’t move. He just sat there with the ring box in his hand, staring at Emily.
