Emily’s heart was heavy, but her face gave nothing away. It was just her and Andrew facing off against six men. The odds couldn’t be worse.

She raised her chin and spoke up. “How much did Benjamin Gomez pay you? Is it really worth it? You know this is a law-abiding country. Aren’t you afraid of ending up back in prison?”

The guy with the scar burst out laughing, and the others joined in. “We just got out of prison. What’s left to be scared of?”

He stared at her, letting his gaze linger. He licked his lips, his intentions all too clear. “We get paid and get to spend the night with a beauty like you. Even if we get locked up again, it’s worth it. It’s not like we’d serve that much time.”

Emily could feel the drug working its way through her system, making her cheeks burn. She didn’t need a mirror to know her face was probably bright red.

The men looked her over, their eyes hungry and wild, as if she was prey and they were circling predators.

“Ms. Blair, if you just go along with us, we’ll make sure you enjoy yourself,” one of them taunted.

Emily’s expression turned ice cold.

The scarred man glanced at Andrew. “Mr. Lane, are you really planning to stick around? There’s only one of you. You can’t protect her. Walk away while you can. We’ll pretend we never saw you.”

Andrew suddenly turned to her and pulled her into his arms, shielding her from their stares.

She breathed in his crisp, clean scent and almost lost herself to the drug’s dizzying pull. She bit down hard on the inside of her cheek, doing anything she could to keep her head clear.

Andrew cradled the back of her head and leaned in close, his voice low. “Can you hold on?”

Emily’s breaths came quick and shallow. “What are you planning to do?”
