“Okay, I’ll remember that,” Andrew said, watching her carefully.

Emily hesitated, then added, “If you run into any trouble at work, you can tell me. I’ll see if I can help smooth things over.”

Andrew’s lips curled into a lazy smile, his eyes bright with amusement. “You really care that much?”

“You’re in the hospital because of me. It’s the least I can do,” Emily replied.

He shrugged, looking playful. “My work’s fine, but you know what I’d like to hear instead.”

Emily didn’t even blink. “I’ve said what I needed to say. I’m leaving.”

Andrew clutched at his wound, his face screwing up in exaggerated pain. “Don’t go. My side hurts. Can’t you say something sweet to make me feel better?”

She gave him a cold stare, clearly unimpressed. “Like what?”

Still clutching his side, he looked up at her, completely shameless. “Maybe if you said you liked me… or something…”

Emily rolled her eyes and turned to leave.

“Wait,” Andrew called out, cutting in before she could walk away. “Alright, I’ll stop pretending. Just… don’t leave yet.”

She stopped, one hand on the door. “What now?”

His face relaxed, but there was still a flicker of something wounded in his eyes. He reached under his pillow and pulled out a small white velvet box.

Emily’s gaze flickered. She already knew what was inside.

Sure enough, Andrew opened the box, revealing a pink diamond ring. It was completely different from the one before, but just as beautiful and expensive looking. He really had gone and made another one, just like he said he would.

Andrew held the ring out to her. “Maybe if you accept this ring, my pain will go away.”

Emily dropped her gaze to the diamond sparkling in the box. Under the harsh hospital lights, it glimmered beautifully. The size alone would leave most people speechless. The old Emily would have taken it without a second thought, using it as proof that Andrew loved her.
