Ethan gripped her shoulders gently and spoke in a low voice. “It’s going to be okay. Both Grandpa and Dennis will pull through. Don’t be scared.”

Even with Ethan’s comfort, Amelia couldn’t calm her nerves. Anxiety twisted inside her, making her chest feel tight. She closed her eyes, nodded weakly, and tried to hold herself together.

Time dragged on painfully. After what felt like ages, but was really just half an hour, the doors to the emergency room finally swung open. Kevin and Dennis were wheeled out almost at the same time. A doctor followed close behind, announcing that both of them had made it through. The procedures were successful, and they were safe.

Amelia’s legs gave out as relief crashed over her. She dropped to the floor, arms braced against the tiles, and let herself breathe for the first time all night.

“Thank goodness… they’re alright…”

Ethan quickly helped her up, steadying her until she could stand. Together, they joined the rest of the family and made their way to Kevin’s hospital room.

This hospital belonged to the Lane family. The director, Lauren, had rushed over as soon as she heard the news. She personally made sure Kevin and Dennis were given the most secure, private VIP rooms right next to each other.

Lauren and the doctor explained everything to Amelia and Ethan. Kevin had fainted because he was overwhelmed by shock. His body just couldn’t take it and he’d need time to recover. There was still some risk, so he had to rest and watch out for complications. Dennis had swallowed too many sleeping pills, but luckily, he was brought in fast and the amount wasn’t life-threatening. After having his stomach pumped and getting fluids, he’d just need to stay overnight for observation. If nothing happened, he could go home.

Once Lauren and the doctor left, Amelia finally let herself relax. She took a deep, shaky breath and felt some of the weight lift from her shoulders.

Ethan’s voice was soft. “Grandpa’s still out. We’ll talk in the morning.”

Amelia nodded. Things hadn’t gone exactly as planned, but somehow, the ending was still what she’d hoped for.

The next morning, both Kevin and Dennis woke up.

Amelia didn’t want to upset Kevin, so she sat quietly beside his bed, holding a cup of water. Her voice was gentle. “Grandpa, are you thirsty? Hungry? Should I have someone bring you breakfast?”
